THE HIGHER CRITICISM.

■ Sir,—ln regard to your excellent leading article on tlie Rev. T. H. Sprotfs. book and the "Higher Criticism," it would be helpful to many of your readers if you wolild publish the more striking passages of scholars' criticisms of "the Higher Critics." This would convince-your readers (who are open to be convinced) of the extreme fallibility of "Higher Critics," and that the only safe course in tnoso matters, as in every department of science, is to accept nothing as true until its verity has bean demonstrated. .True knowledge is grounded on' demonstration. • Very much that is now taught in regard to the Bible and religion and science never has. been, and never will be, demonstrated. In regard to the. Old Testament it matters not who wroto the books contained in this volume.; The question is, Wore tlfeo books in eiistence hundreds of years before •our Lord appeared on earth, and isour authorised version a correct translation of those anciont documents? This question .is answered in the affirmative by scholars of highest standing, and on the strongest possiblo evidence. Tho next step- is to demonstrate that tko New Testament, was in existence at the end of the first contury of the Christian ora; that it was written by the persons to whom it is attributed; and that it is authentio. This has beon done. Thus the. inspiration of botli Old and ■ New Testaments is demonstrated. By "inspiration" I mean that the books contain a Divine revolation; not that, every word is in. spired, but that; sdl whichyis givon as coming from God is inspired. • The Old Testament was so received by Christ •Himself and by His Apostles, according to the New Testament. With all the facts before us, ebnlDaring tho Old and Now Testnments, observing their very remarkable unity, and thatthe two volumes are; mutually explanatory 'and congrmatorv. we are not likely to. bo troubled in mind by "Higher Critics,' some of whom, at anyrate, are nothing botter than infidels, and have been ;proved to be amongst, the greatest blunderers on earth.—l am, etc., ~ , Loirer Hutt, NoTtamberW, IMS, .
