The final rifle competition for the quarter was shot off on Saturday by tha. Palmerston Rifles for the N.C.O.'s shield, the ranges being 600 and 700 yards. Volunteer' Ball came but on top with a score of ill, Corporal Tremaine' 48, Volunteer Griggs 48,: Corporal Kells ~ 11. A high wind'across the rango made it difficult at.times to find the target. -The highest iggre.gato for the quartar.was the score of Volunteer Friend, who pat. on 102, and ; this, with a handicap of, ii, made his total 123. He beat Corporal Tremaine, who' had a handicap of 15j by one point. Sergeant Perrin, from scratch, made 117. Previous winners of the shield are:—Sergeant Stock (2), Colour-Sergeant Perrin, Corporal Tremaine,. Pickering and T. Uriggs (handicap 3) defeating J. A Nash'find C. T. Spooner. (scr.). There .was a good muster of cricketers'on the '.sports'-ground'-on Saturday afternoon. The only championship match was that between United and Feilding, ..which . -.was continued from the previous Saturday, when Beilding batted first and put up 127. United continued their first innings,, and notched 171, of which Bartlett contributed 43, Coyne 42, Skillevand O'Connor It each, and Goldspring 12.
