A mim named William Cunningham appeared in the'"doCfc in answer to a chargo of assault-, ihg Adolph Perham, a young in tin, ill' the Basin Reserve'-on Friday night Inst;..! : Perham stated in evidence that about, 10.20 p.m. ho was proceeding via the Basin Reserve to his home in Frederick Stroot. While passing through the reserve, he., was suddenly grasped by the shoulders by sorneond behind hmi. He wrenched himself ireo, and rfin m tho direction of the custodian's house, but his assailant gave chase ahd 'overtook hi oi; and seized him- bythe throat, and, .remarking, "I'll do for your knocked' him down. .Witness again wrenched himself free, and managed to get as far lis tho fonco surrounding l .the cottage,- when his assailant onco more caught him. Just then the ortstodiari came on tho scene,, and witness proceeded to' the Mount Cook I'olice Station ior help. The man was subsequently arrested and identified by him (witness). _.. Evidenco, was also given by. tho custodian and the conStablo, who-arrested the accused. Both 'stated that the man was under tho influence of liquor at the time, and ho had admitted to the constable that ho "gave him (Perham) a poke or two." ' Tho , accused,' 1 William Cunningham, said he was a, labourer,: belonging'.to Wangnnui. Ho had only arrived in Wellington last Sunday, and. had since -been staying at tho Salvatjon Army barracks. .He denied that he had been iri 'tho Basin Reserve. Someone had struck him in the'oye.;by :the: gates :'of the reserve.
