. AUSTRALIAN ALLIANCE ASSURANCE,: The • balance-sheet of the Australian Alliance Assurance Co. disclose? particulars ef the losses inado during the year ended August 31, and also the depreciation in tho assets, due to revaluation. The onorationn for th(* twelve months under review have been disastrous, owry department of the business phoning a loss, aggregating£l9,o97. . Of this sum- 'fire accounts for £292? marine for £11,278, fidelity guarantee and accident for £4890. The depreciation of securities absorbed'£46,6sß, and to the life .branch £13.146 had to be transferred in order to bring the funds up. to the required total of £181,741. The result of the year's operations obliterates tho reserve fund of £40,000, together ■ with tho credit of £6407 hitherto standing at profit and loss, and leaves thnt account in debit to tho extent of £32.084. The ' a3?ets ae written down ■ now stand at' £296,455, after extinguishing tho debit at.profit and loss, whilst the liabilities, cxclu- , sive of capital acount, amount to £203,539, leaving £92.916 as representing shareholders' funds. To this mnst bo added £10,000 paid by tho London and Lancashire 00. for the goodwill and any surplus loft out of tho provision made for, outstanding losses and expenses in suspense. As already stated, this works out at a fraction over 41s. per share, upon which 50s. have been paid. - In iustico to ■the exeoutive, it may bo pointed' out that' tho valuation of the assets from which the buUc of tho losses accrued was of a, drastic character. At the Same time, it is only"- too evident that the business had lost its resiliency and a change of management was imperative in. tho interests of the shareholders. : Customs revenue ■ collected at Wellington yesterday amounted to £2598 Bs. 4d.
