' . .'■ ANNUAL CONFEEENCE. CONDITIONS OF'CONTRACT. Delegates of tho provincial branches of the fifth annual conference of; the New : Zealand Institute of Architects , met in AVellinjton' on Wednesday for their annual conference. Mr. T. Mahony, o£ Auckland, presided, and tho other delegates-were: Messrs. A. G. Daw and J S. Goldsbro, Auckland; J. CharleSworth, F. de J. Clere, A. Atkins, E.-M. Blake, G. G. Schwartz, and E. Bacon, Wellington; F- 3: Barlow, C. J; Mountford, and E. D. Harman, canterbury; P. J. A. Salmond and F. Petrie, Otagoj-C.-'J. Brodrick, Southland. Eeporters were not admitted. '< Tho annual report stated that the Institute and its brauches were increasing in strength and usefulness, the /rules adopted last year tonding to concentrate the force of the profession. It having-: been apparent for: some time that. certain incongruities existed, and that amendments 'were required in the conditions of contract,: the council set up a committee to draft a revised set. This has been done, and the draft has been further-revised by the council, and copies have been handed to the Federation of Builders of New Zealand for consideration at its annual conference. Tho membership of the Institute comprises 77 fellows, 18 associates; and one life member. The number of students enrolled is 30: Eegret was expressed at "the death of, Mr. E. W-. England, of Christchurch, a fellow of the institute. .The report' of 'the committee on /students' training advises students to ■ obtain the sanction of- their principals to attend classes' at the 'Technical School; also that, a ' regular course of lectures and competitions be drawn up. The lectures should be controlled by each branch, and should be bi-monthly at least, or , as frequently as suitable. The competitions should bo set, controlled and adjudicated by a committee appointed -for the purpose, preferably formed of Wellington members as being in closer touch; with headquarters and ono another. Both reports were adopted. ... A committee was appointed vjith power.to establish a quarterly journal fof tho institute. The draft conditions' of contract wero ap : proved/ and it "was decided to take steps towards tho holding of a conference between 10 architects and 10 builders to deal finally with the matter. It was suggested'that this conference should be held next February.' The balance-sheet showed a satisfactory position of the finances of tho institute / The following officers were ■ elected:—President, Mr. C. J. Mountford; hon. treasurer, Mr. F. de J. Clere; hon secretary, Mr. A; Atkins; secretary, Mr. W. Beatichamp-Platts; auditors, Messrs. Badham and Biss. In response to a request, Mr. F.,Petrq, expresident, presented his portrait.to tho institute. ' The annual dinner was held 'at Godber's, Cuba Street, Mr. J. Charlesworth presiding. Apologies for absonco were received from his Excellency the Governor, the Prime Minister, the Hon. E. M'Kenzie, tho'Mayor, Mr. W. G. Duthio (president of the Chamber'of Commerce), and others. The rcsponso to the toast .of "Visiting Delegates" was entrusted to Messrs Daw (Auckland). Barlow (Canterbury), Pctro (Otago), and Brodrick'-.(Southland). "Our Guests" (proposed by Mr. A. Atkins) was responded to by Messrs. W. H. Mortons (City Engineer), AV. S. La Trobe (Director of the Technical School), and W.vH. Bennett (prosident of the N.Z. Builders' Federation). Mr. T.
