■;■■ :■;■ : monthly meeting. : ■■' Tho monthly meeting of tho Wellington Education Board was, held yesterday, there being present: Tho chairman (Air". Itohort Lee), and Messrs. H. Elder, A. H. Vile, J. G. AV. Aitkon, William Allan,. AV. H. Mold, M.1 , ., AV. G. Buchanan, Ml'., and A. \V; Hogg, M.P. -/ ■ . ; ' FINANCE-AND WORKS. ■ The monthly statement of finances disclosed a debit balance of ,£3695 12s. Ud., as against a debit of .Ki:!2s ss. Id."for the previous month. A debit balance of - «Gs3(il Os. lid. was shown, against tho buildings' account, while other accounts—general, technical, manual, and technical secondary, salaries, ami deposits—aggregated, in credit balances, .tICCj 7s. 9d. The contract liabilities totalled "JC2667- 10s. .lid. On tho recommendation of the Works and Finance Committee, grants lor works at the following schools were approved:—Otaki, Waikanae, iCilbirnie, Korokoro, Pctorie West, Featherston, Te Aro, Pukehinau, Te Nui, and Makoraako. Applications for works at - tho following schools were declined:—South Wel.iington, To'-Horo, Lansdownc, Homeburn, Hamua, and Hukanui. : It was resojvod that tho latrine systems at Eoseneath,. Kilbimie,' Northland, Island Bay, Maranui, and AVadestown be converted to the water system, and connected with drainage a3 soon as convenient after tho latter is laid in 'the. respective districts, that the existing buildings be used where practicable, and that 'Eoseneath. be now proceeded 'with. With regard to the' Brooklyn School, it wa3 decided, that in consideration of the board allowing the drainage to be laid through tho board's site, tho corporation be asked to make the necessary connections with the board's service. Other matters decided were as follow:—Masterton—The offer of a museum site is to ba referred to the inspectors for report. Northland (toolshed)—The amount payable by. the be limited to the grant already made. Karori—lnquiry, to be made regarding the committee's undertaking; to metal. Eketahiina— Tenders to be invited for removal, in accordonce with resolution already, carried. Hukanui—The clerk of works to make' examination and reporf to the hoard regarding offer of residence;. .Sit«s-(a) Gladstone: Proposal of tho committee regarding the situ, at Gladstone was referred to Mr.. Buchanan; (b) Acre 40, Newman: Mr. C.Monaghan's tender of 15s. per annum for ten years from January. 1 was accepted. Woodwork Classrooms~-Aiiplicatioh .to be made for grants sufficient: to erect a plain buildin." for instruction in woodwork at, the district high school, centres where these are required. Lyne v. the Board—ln the case, Lyno v. the Board, judgment/Tras given to tho board, Kith costs £12 12s. Any amount payable .to Mr. Lyno for the present month is to he devoted to liquidation of the costs. District High School, and of,the formation of a cadet corps at Worser Bay School.', ■]' NORMAL TRAINING COLLEGE. V.
;A report submitted by the committee of advice, of the Normal Training College, stated, with regard to students attending the. university, that'l4 had, passed for-first year,-15 for second year, and 6 for third year terms; 3 were, sitting for their M.A. degrees,.? for first 8.A., aJid 17 for second B.A. To the foregoineworo 'added the'facts that two graduates (M.A.) were 'giving most of their: time "to the study of, methods,' and that, nearly 40 more of the stu. dents, kept, terms in previous years—evidence of the high standard of general culture reached by; tho majority of ■ the. .students.... Degree students: undertook less, science work at the Training College than the, non-degree'. All were required to tako minimum, courses inexp'erimental science. The , non-degree students took-more extended :coursos in physiography and general experimental science. The' science course . included, instruction to . second year students, in: (a). chemistry 'of, plant and animal life; (b) laboratory experiments dealing with plant growth and .soils;-(c) practical work, in cultivation of plots and in growing various plants and cereals. .
