AMALGAMATION: A STEP FORWARD,, At last night's meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council, tho -Uhder-Sccrelary. for In-, ternal AfFnirs. forwarded a copy of the commissioner's report''(previously published) respecting the .petition-to'include'-Gear Island in the.Borough.of Petono. . . ■■ .. ■ . ' "Is thero likely to be anything done in the way'of ..amalgamation?" asked a councillor. ■ "I think we should make a move now," said Councillor. Baldwin, and he moved:— ■ :

' Abazaar inaid of the funds of the Petone Baptist Church and Sunday .School was opened at the.Oddfellows' Hall, Petone, yesterday'by the Hon. Geo. JTowlds. Mr.-Towlds, who was introduced by the Rev. T. A. Williams, made a brief speech congratulating the ladies on the work'exhibited in the stalls. \\Tien he, had declared the sale of work open, he Was j)resented. with, a buttonhole by' Miss May Wilkerson.:. The various, stalls 'were supervised as follow:—Work stall: Mesdnmes Edmeades, Lewthwaite,.' Robson, and Atkinson; handker-' chief.stall: Misses Shearer andiArnold; flower stall': Missee-Strand and Annie,Edmeades; produce stiill.: Young Men's Bible Class; baker's oven:, Masters VVilfred Haddy'.'and Chas.'Edmeades; Christmas tree:, iliases- Bessie Edmeadesand Ethel Wilhelm; lollie stall:. Misses Haddy. and Elsie and Edie Edmeades; cooking competition: Mrs. Godber; afternoon tea: Mesdames Palmer, Wilkersou, Shardlow, and Haig,. Misses Edmeades and Low (2). PETONE ROWING CLUB. ,' : ' The Petone Rowing.Club got off, one heat of the Senior. Fours on Tuesday evening, when White, (stroke), Byines, /Burridge,' and Inglis beat Tremain (stroke), Dru'mmond,. Parr, and Canty. . The. race- was a . keen ■ one, White's crew .winning by'Va- canvas.-'. The second heat of the same race.,will be rowed this evening.

Welch and Wakehara, waited on the Hntt Borough Council-, last'-night to ask' them to take over 'the control of; the cemetery .'.The.Rev., J. T.Nott.explained,that the-prin-ciple, of, the control of the cemetery by a local body had already been affirmed, since, the trustees -were nominated .by the local bodies.
