THE LOST SHIRTS.

AN INTERLUDE. Now and then an amusing interlude brightens the depressing gloom which attends, the dispensation of ohantablo aid at the Benevolent Institution every Tuesday/afternoon. Such an incident occurred yesterday. An old man,-with the fire of a righteous cause burning in lis eyes, came down from the Ohiro Home on a special mission. He stood at the foot of tho board table, and stated his cabe. When he, some twelve months' ago,' entered the home, he was possessed' ot fourteen shirts and twelve pairs of socks. "Fourteen shirts!" ejaculated tho chairman (Mr. John Smith), "I neror had half that many at any time." Now, said the old man, they had all disappeared. Further ho had been promised a new suit of clothes—for "Sunday best"—but tho promiso had never materialised,' and his present and only suit, a faded black, was incompatible with self-respect. Where, ho asked, nere tho shirts? And where, he demanded, was tho new suit for Sunday? Mr. Robertson was not favourably disposed to extensive wardrobes. "You would have a terrible job to watch all these shirts," ho said. That, submitted tho man, was not tho point. Whore woro tho shirts? Tho chairmrin, with some levity, hazarded'an opinion that oomeone must have lit tho copper fire, with them. It was explained by Mr. A. H. Tnlebridgo that the shirts wero good in parts only, and ■that thorn was, in. their case,-no virtuo.'in holiness. Concerning tho suit, thoro hart been a promise. "I was to got them on the First of April," contended plaintiff. Somebody laughed, and remarked that the date was '■ not an auspicious : one, Aft»r further explanation' the board decided to procure the suit, and plaintiff departed, highly pleased.
