PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmcrston, November 23. The Chinoso Consul for tho Dominion, Mr.' Hwang, arrived hero yesterday, and was entertained at dinner by tho mombcrs of the Nana- ' ttatu Philosophical Society. Mr.' M. A. Eliott, ■ president of the society, occupied tho chair.' Councillor Haydon (representing the Borough ■ Council), Mr. J. M. Johnston (president of the Chamber of Commerce), and Mr. D. Biiick, M.P., were among,thoso present. The health of the guest was duly honoured. In the oven. ing the Consul gave a lectuio to a crowded audience at the Opera House on the "Social Life of China," which proved highly ing and instructive. At its conclusion Mr, Hwang was accorded a hearty vote of thanki, and in moving a vole of thanks to tho socielj , for arranging the lecture, Mr. J. M.
