PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Last nighf s meeting of the Petone Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. W M'Ewan), *■ and Councillors Short, Harding v Southgate, Piper, List, Jones, Trueman, and Young ' Dr Harding leported a case of diphtheria at Fitzherbert Street, ketone. The Minister for Itailways wrote in reply to a deputation introduced by Mr T M. Wiliord, MP, asking that the up mail train should stop at Petone The Minister had made inquiries and had ascertained that, for a period of six months, 1197 persons from Petone booked for stations beyond Kaitoke, while 1736 booked from Lower Hutt By tho mail tram there wore 1102 passengers from Hutt, and only 460 from Petone for the same period By the afternoon Wairarapa tram, 215 passengers booked irom Petone, and 329 from Hutt Under tho circumstances tho Minister could not authorise the stoppage at Petone In another letter, Mr Wilford stated that the reply was not satisfactory, and he intended to point out to the Minister the fallacy of the figures, as a number of were compelled to valk to Hutt from Potono to board tho train The member for tho district added that he would acquaint:the Minister:with the weakness of the Department's viewpoint Councillor Harding The question is its own ' solution Tho tram will not run after December 6 The letter, was received. The grocers of Potone forwarded a petition praying that in future tho closing hours be 10 p m on Saturdays, 1 p m on Wednesdays, and 9 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Tndays The clerk was insti noted to make inquiries and forward tno petition to tho Labour Dopaitment The Wesleyan Young Men's Instituto was given permission to hold a procession through the streets of tho borough on December 1, in connection with a carnival. 1 The Rev Mother of tho Institution of tho Nofro Dame des Missions applied for the remission of rates on properties m Britannia Streot used foi charitable purposes The Mayor explained that the question was beforo the Appeal Court Councillor Piper moved that, nntd tho proceedings were decided, tho council charge the rates This was carried The Public Trustee advised the council tiat the beneficiaries of the late Mr W B, Buick were agrpeablo to guarantee 5300 towards the cost of a proposed drainago scheme
