BANKING IN NEW ZEALAND.

_ Sir;—l have been wondering, fori 6omo. time if appearances aro Everything," if so, then I ; must be nothing. A short time ago I became 'the possessor, of a . small ; capital which I placed in /. the custody! of V bank > situated in' a- progressive. town famous ■ for its river. I left • that town shortly -afterwards and' sinco then have'beenWandering from' to town. To como to the point, surely thero must be some easy method which can .'be adopted to enable clients to draw, money from branches i belonging.to the .'.bank in which their money' ■is lodged. To-day -• I: was anxious to draw a small sum. I went to the bank and : told them my business : and 'was advised .to wire to my bank ill that famous'river town, and-instruct' the banker there to transfer the'sum I required to their branch in -Wellington. All this, of course,, is quite sensible. But why should an absolute stranger in a strango town bo treated as ! a suspicious character -, because the- bank-was unbusinesslike in its methods? I carried out my instructions, sent an .urgent telegram to that bank, sent a reply-paid telegram four hours afterwards,. and am still waiting- for a reply—perhaps I-. struck another bank holiday. I naturally became anxious at the non-arrival of a reply and paid my third visit to the bank. During a-short conversation ' I was nsked "if I was-sure I .had a balance at the bank." I'have received some dirty, bumps during :my four years -in, New Zealand, . but- that question was the hardest I've had. Surelj" a system can be established to enablo' strangers'visiting strango towns' ,to draw their own money without having'to bow down to the bullyings from persons to whom they aro contributing to keep alive. Hoping you will understand the object of . this letter,— I am, etc., . \ x ■; W.'G. G,
