TRAMWAYS PEOPOSAL MOOTED, • : THE STOCK YAEDS-SITE. (By Telegraph.— Special Correspondent). •r • •■■- ; -•■• • ''•■ •: Palmerston, November 17. ;" On Monday, evening next Mr. Hwang, Chinese Consul for the Dominion, will'give a.lecture in|tho'Mnnicipal Hall,'under"the "auspices-of tho Manawatu Philosophical Society,'on "The Social Lifo of China." Mr. Hwang comes with a great reputation as a lecturer, 1 and doubtless a large' 1 audience will assemble, to hear tlid : ad-' dress. Prior to the lecture Mr.. Hwang will bo ontertaiued at dinner'by tho Philosophical So- .'■... ■.-.,-•■ ,'. It is expected that.the additions and alterations to the" Longburn freezing works will be completed in about a week or ten days, when freezing operations will bo resumed. - ' The attendance -of children at 1 the College Street School has increased very largely of late, so much indeed that it has becomo necessary to have the services of' another teacher, and the 'Wanganui .Education Board has. consented to appoint one. ; The Opora House Committee, of the 'Borough. Council has recommended, and the council'has adopted the suggestion, that about .£2OO should bo expended in altering the dress circle so as to improve the view of the stage from tho pit. At tho present time those sitting : tv,-o or threo ■rows back .from tho : front, of • the.. pit can see very little'of what is going on on the stage. The dross circle seems to'havo been badly designed in the first place. Additional exits are also to be made from tho cloak rooms, which will minimise the crowding and jostling which now takes place after any function; at . the Opera House. In his report to the Borough Council last night, Mr. Black (curator) stated that, about fifteen thousand plants were still ..required for planting tho. squares, and donations of plants would bo gladly received. Mr. 0. Clelland has undertaken the- secretaryship of the Manawatu Cricket Association, an office. which was for many years held by Mr.F.J. Oakley. Pressure of business compelled Mr. Oakley's resignation, and much regret is expressed among cricketers at his retirement, though they recognise they have been very fortunate in securing the services of Mr. Clelland to" fill the breach. A deputation from tho Palmerston High School governor's, consisting of, Messrs. W. Ruthorfurd (chairman), W. Park, J. L. Barnicoat, and Archdeacon Harper, and tho rector, Mr. J. 13. Vernon, waited on tho Borough Council; at its meeting last night in regard to the proposal by the live stock auctioneers to remove their 6aloyards from the present site in Rangitikei ■ Street to the centre .-.of a section abutting on Grey, and' Featherston Streets. Mr. Eutherfurd said that th'e boardhad no objection to the proposed new site, but they did take exception to the proposal that all cattle should be made to go through the Peatherston Street entrance to tho yards, thus passing right in front of:the boys' gates at tho High School. The board were of the opinion that Grey -Street should be made 'to carry its fair proportion of tho cattle traffic. They were quite prepared to accept their fair share of the inconvenience, and thought other peoplo should face, the proposal in a similar-spirit. The Borough Council afterwards discussed tho matter at considerable length, and it was eventually decided to adopt the plan originally placed before the Works Committee, viz., to place tho yards in ,the centre, of tho Grey Street section, and to run the-two roads right through from Grey Street to Featherston Street. ! . Messrs. S. B.' Lancaster arid H. Gillies, ..of Palmerston, have been appointed judges at the Whangarei Show, and leave for the north on Saturday.. The senior, and junior championship cricket matches begin on Saturday next. The seniors will.compete for tho Barraud Cup, and the juniors for the Watson Shield. • The Mayor intimated at tho meeting,of the Borough Council last night that he would shortly.call a special meeting of- the council to go into the question of'the installation of a tram system for' Palmerston, \ Ho stated, that he had a considerable amount of data to placo before councillors. ': . ' J Another black swan has been presontcd to the-Borough Council to bo placed, on the Squ'aro lakelets, Mr. Barnett, of Cuba Street, being the donor. A 'deputation: of Fitzherbort settlers,' accompanied by representatives from the' Palmerston Borough Council, Chamber of Commerce, and others interested, will wait on-the Minister for Roads and Sridges on Saturday morning, to ask for the reinstatement of the subsidy promised towards .the erection of tho Hokowhitu Bridge. .' , ;!,■'■• "• •'.] Two yonng men named Sutherland and Rogers I .were brought up at tho Police Court yesterday and charged with breaking", tho glass-'of a notice board at tho Borough Council Chambers.
