R. Atkinson moved:—"That this committee expresses lis profound gratitude to tho Government for its decision to provide for the . safety of the country by the establishment of the principle of compulsory militaiy training for our young mon, and hopes that no ■ effort will be, spared to have th? necessary legislation passed during tho present session in order both to provide for the safety of New i Zealand and to encourage' the movement in all the other States of the Empire for Ch\» same urgently-needed meaauTO 'Of tion." This was seconded by Mis. !?.> W." Euthorfurd and : carried unanimously. ' Colonel Hume moved:—"Thrl tins sub-corn- ' mittoe desires to place on recjjrd its high ftppeoiation of the spendid, pioneer work done by the Now Zealand Defence. League in connection with the movement fort universal military tiaining, and to cqngiati>*o the league . upon the adoption of the principle by tho Government, and that a copy-of this resolution be forwarded to the aon-«ocrotaTy of tho'lcaguo at Auckland." This was seconded by Mrs. W, A. Evans, and carried unanimously. Mr. S. A. Atkinson moved.—"That this public eub-committee earnestly rocommends .tho Government to increase from two years to thrco years tho period of training proposed for young men from 18 bo 21; and alio to increase Uio' numbor of days' continuous training from tho 14 proposed to 80 days in tho first year, and 14 days in each of the second and third years. Further, that in any ovent, inducement bo held ont to men in training to take i a longer period of consocntivo training by making a more than proportionate reduction of the number of sopatate evenings, half days, and wholo days proposed tor training." This was secondoj by Mr. Robert WKcttrie, and carried unanimously. ' ,
