Owing to the United States tariff imposing a duty of 35 per cent, on belting entering the United States, Messrs. it. and T. Dick, of Glasgow, aro erecting a factory in New Jersey of greater capacity than their Glasgow works. THE STATES AND CANADA. RETALIATION. Ottawa, November 8. Owing to the action of the United States in reimpos)ng under the new tariff a tonnage tax on the great lakes, Sjr Wilfrid Lnurier, the Canadian Premier, is about to retaliate. 1 Only one Canadian pawienger and ono freight line are now seriously affected, but many American vessels carry grain from Port Arthur to Buffalo, and thc«e will bo subjected to a Canadian tax. [The Unjted States Senato passed an amendment to the Tariff Bill, on the proposition of Mr. I'rye, imposing a dnty of two cents a ton, not to exceed in the aggregate ton cents & ton in any one year, on the tonnage of all vessels entering tho United States from foreign ports in North and Central America and >n certain countries in South America, and six cents a ton, not to cxoe«<l 30 cents a ton per annum, on vessels ■ coming from all other foi-eign ports The effect 1 of these duties is to eliminate reciprocity in shipping dues ]
