THE REPORTING OF SHOWS.
(To the Editor ) Sir,—Pardon mo drawing your attention to an erroneous report which appeared in your issue of 1 nday last regarding the judging ot the (Jlydesdale mares at tho Vlananatu Show on the previous da\ You state "The decisions in the Clydesdale hor«e classes have justified the selection made by Mr. Short's agent in ■ England, for one of his imported mares (only 1 ten days off the steamer) won a champion I A a matter of fact, not one of Mr Short's imported animals gained a nrst award The champion ■ was bred by Mr. J. Allison, qt Southland, who sold her to Mr. Taylor, WaiV.ato, -who,' in turn, sold her. to .Mr., Short, But, in justice to your reporter, let me point out that the show catalogue sets out, in Class ,50, No. I;>7, that this mare was bred by "3 Allison, Scotland" It seems that all the trouble that: tho Mana'watu committee had over Mr Chute's entries a few years ago is forgotten. , I .maintain ■ that proper notification of anj errors" that may occnr in the show catalogue should bo supplied to the pi ess A (much ttnore serious assertion was allow ed to pas 3 unchallenged by the committee, vir, tint contained in the "Manawatu Daily Times" of November 5 After that paper refers to the draught horso classes, we find the following —"Mr J D Mitchel's bay Hero IGo, Herd Laddie—Maggie, bred by J Boag, Chnstchurch, and Mr E Short's Eojal Treasure Tho first-named, in spite of slightly de fectivo hocks, secured the championship" I repeat Is the Manawatu Committee doing its duty by tho two veterinary surgeons who officially examined the entire horses as to soundness befoie judging in not asking that paper to correct its report? If this horse has "defMtive hocLs," where is tho boasted benefits that breeders in general aro going to denvo from this association by having all stallions examined by qualified before judging When wo find a horse that passes tho experts referred to by a paper as having "slightly defochve hocke," such a statement is a cruel wrong to Mr Mitchel, who purchased this horse in the Commonwealth, and impoited him back here rat a large outlaj And it is also interesting to know that Mr Mitchel holds a certihcato of soundness for Here I Go from Mi Gilruth, who is head of tho Department in iMelboume All who saw this handsome hor«o at Palmerston are ware how uniair this papers comments arc And when you entered his bo\ vou never found him standing wrong I trust this humblo protesi may come under the notice of the honourable and courteous president of tho Manawatu A iand P Societj —I am, etc , v I ' OLD SHOWMAN November G, 1909 CODITN MOTH IN APPLES AND PEAES -A certain remedy 18 Swift's Arsenate of Load Sprav after petals of blossoms fall Continue at intervals throughoat tho Season
