IT. Witford, on behalf 'of Edgar i. Joseph Mercer, telio hid pleaded guilty to theft j* «t LoTin, asked that sentence might bo postponed. It irai desired that a number of witnesses should be called in regard to th( case. ' Mr. Foil, for the Crown, offered no objection to this course being adopted Mr. Wilford handed over to Mr Fell an i araonnt of .£3B, which the prisoner, had, admitp todly, stolen. The Court agreed that sentence should stand over unbl Monday, Na\ ember 15 Bail was allowed, the prisoner s brother becoming surety. - AN EXTENDED' PROBATION. Dealirg with the'ease of Wilham Costello, who had pleaded guilty to breaking and enter, ing, and the then of two Jiall-soveroigns it Porangahau, his Honour said that, in ,view of the prisoner's history, the probation officers report 6ould not hayo been made favourable. The police had hud him under suspicion for some time, and ho had been behaving loosely. His previous convictions had not been of a serious nature hCrfe\or, and he would be admitted to probation. The period would be r 4n extended years—and, as he was an ablo.-bodipd man who conld oasilv obtain wort, ho'would bo ordered tO'mako a • contribution of £i towards tha costs of the prosecution, and to roftrad to Mr Thomas the 20s stolen JLhe payments were to be made at the rate of 10s. per month.
