On Monday a.cottage in< the , Arowhenua pa, near Tomuka, was destroyed by firo (writes our Christchuroh correspondent). The house was in charge of a little niece of;the-occupier, who had also to attend to tho baby. The cm was in tho kitchen warming some food, for the babj on a spirit lamp when the lamp exploded, and tho room was instantly a mass'of flames. The baby was. in the front room, and tho mrlmado a rush to save it. Tho flames followed, her, but she managed to: snatch the infant up ■ and escape,,through the' front door. The • baby's faco was somewhat injured by the fire, and the girl's forehead was burnt; her hair was singed, and the blouse she was wearing vras scorched.
