RANGITIKEI'S WANTS.
Sevoral requests for Government assistance for works in the Rnngitikei district were brought under the notico of tho Hon. R. Jl'Kenzio (Minister for Public Works) by a deputation, which was introduced by Mr Smith, M.1 , ., and included members of the ljjngitikoi County Council and Mr Newman, M.P. for Manawatu. t Tho first of the works to which attentionwc3 drawn was tho metnUing of loads in tho vicin ity of Mataroa. It was. mentioned that the local ajthonty proposed to borrow .610,500 for the work. Owing to the fact that the money had to be procured on the open market and gravel was scarce in the district a subsidy of £1000 was sought. The neit work referred to was the connecting rood beUeen tho reads ]ust mentioned and township of llataroa. The loca lauthont} intended to raise £1500 for the work In tho way of subsidy 4s in the £ was asked, The deputation then applied for a subsidy of 10? Jin tho £ up to ,£2oOO in connection nth the constiuction of tho Toroa Bridge. Lastlj, application was made foi a grant towards the improvement of that portion of tho Auckland-Wellington Road near Taihape It was stated that half tho liaffic into Taihape pushed aver tho road. This was described as the worst road in the district. i The Minister said tho Government was always anuoiis to assist those who were willing to ttbSist , themselves. The proposals by tho sottiers Eecmed to bo very fair If there was money for the purpose he v.as inclined to think Cabinet would assist in connection with tho Works..
