St,-John Ambulance Fair. Tho much-talked-about fair-in aid of,the St.John Ambulance Nursing -Fund was opened yesterday afternoon at tho Town Hall, her Excellency Lady Plunket coming ail -the way from 1 almerston North by motor-car on purpose to perform that ceremony. She ■ was received by Mrs. Rhodes, president of the committee, the Mayor and Mayoress, and Miss.E. Nathan, acting secretary, and afterwards made a tour, of : the stalls,-each stall-holder being •presented to her. After" that;-: the party made their way to the platform, which was carpeted and- decorated very artistically with flowers Dr. Newman .mado , a brief speech, pointing out the'.importance of the. work which the fair was designed to aid, and commending it to the" sympathy of tho public. : Lady Plunkot, in the' course of her roeech, stated that if only; the people' of Wellington would take full advantage of the opportunity hero offered-them ,for spending 'money, 'and would, spend monoy at this fair persistently for a week, the fund would be as largo as viould bo desired, and the support of two permanent, district nurses for Wellington would be assured. The people of Wellington would then have "lost their vocation,,and would- have nothing to do but support the Plunket nurses; Lady. Plunket "also -congratulated Mrs. Rhodes and her assistants'' on the appearance .of the stalls, and! in''declaring the fair open, wished it every success. • It has been decided that nothing should be spent .'on the 'decoration ,of the. hall; .but. the general effect' was very good, and the simple but- vory effective decoration of the stalls was all that could be -wished, while the. assistants were certainly very decorative. Nearly all ot them. (ire in nurses'. uniform, light coloured or white frocks, with .white aprons, and caps, and on their arms they, wear the silver'cross of-.{ho Knights- of Malta 1 and' St. John. : The colours of the dresses and the frocks.-corres-pond. Those in charge, and in attendance at Mrs. Rhodes's special stall, wear butcher.blue frocks,' and the stall is draped with white and blue. . Mrs. Rhodes is associated- with Mrs. •Moorhdnse, and-'Mrs.' ; A. A.- Con-igan is in ohai-ge of the table; sub-section, -while Mrs. J: R. Gibbons has the very attractive toy section, where dolls and huge elephants keep, compaiiy with Teddy, bears and inonkeja, imij' a dozen varieties of < pots. The North Wellington j Stall' .is '' a. fancy one, and here the' ladies are in • pretty heliotrope frocks, while tho-decoration of their stall corresponds. . The stall pre6idents - are".
