THE NEW CAR-SHED SITE.
OriNION OF THB. ENGINEERS. Before tho City, Council decided on tho purchaso of tho now car-shed site on Thorndon Quayja roport regarding it was obtained from tlio city engineer'(Mr. W. H. Morton) and tho 'city- electrical-engineer (Mr. Stuart Richardson). The repurt presented by tho engineers was: as under!—" In Juno, 1308, the council purchased from tho Wellington and. Manawatu Railway" Company- tho piece of land through which tho tramway : siding; runs' intoi'the Mahawatu . Station... This land, which -has a frontage of 6Gft. and a' depth of 100 ft,, cost! .€2MO, or 410 , pet' foot. Plana were' prepared. to house twelve but no further stops woro taken.' The' objection: to the . erection', ofa shed oh this ;laud , isi the- amount .of special track. Work-that would,havo to bo-laid down'' over ;the- major.hportiOnof tho Roadway.'in front-of tho building. Apart from tho cost, and tho heavy, wear and- tear ou it, duo to vehicle traffic passing over it, tho main lino wottld jhaye .to bo - thrown over • towards \ th'c herb on the opposite side of tho road; ; which, in itself,; would: bo objectionable. 1 Th&; shunting of ..cars in and. out of tho . shed would tako.placo in tho street, find would obstruct! the Tubmdon Quay service,, and also, seriously hamnet' . traffic. ! Including the cost- of; tho building),- nits, trackwork and land,' tho'.bousing of each'car oh the land at tho Manawatu Station would amount to J2800.;' Tho sito now undor consideration -at 'tho • terminus is the only available and suitable site.. It is. free fiom tho objections pointed out in connection with tho site , already' purchased, and will provido ample' space for sheltering twenty-tour of tho largest cars. Wo strongly, advise ■ the purchase of this sito, as in our opinion 'such an opportunity to purchaso will not occur again."': •As stated on' Saturday the council decided to purchaso tho site. .. ~ .
