The Canadian naval sohomo contemplates the fortification of Sydney, Cape Breton, owing to the fact that supplies of coal for tho East Coast have to pass that place. -Foe ports havo made : surveys, with the view of constructing defence works. ; Tho Canadian Government has refnsed to subsidise tho proposed docks at Levis, Canada, and St. John, Now Brunswick, to tho extent (£25,000 per annum) suggested by a recent deputation. The Government; believes that smaller FcdeM assistance will ;be sufficient to enßuro •completion of tho enterprise. [It has boon stated; that tho Government would bd prepared to, pay an annual subsidy equal to 3 per cent.: on tho capital cost, but not to exceed .£9OOO per annum,]
