Several important, matters- were dealt with by- tho Wanganui Cnambor of Commtircs today.' In roply. to. a oiroular from, the Bristol Champer. to colonial ohambern, asking for -coi operation .in the,movement toiencourago direct trade between colonial, porta and Bristol, it resolved to do everything iiossiblo in the direction indioated, and to forward certain information , asked for by.-tho Loino Chamber. The question of . differential rates "on tho New Zealand railways was also brought.> up, some glaring anomalies being quoted:' It was pointed out; that; whin: coal is railed from Taupiri to Hawera,: tho proportion of the freight between Wanganui and-the latter"tuVn was only lid. per ton, whereas,, whon sea-borne coal was landed at AVanganni and:, shipped to Hawera, the, railago was Bs. 3d, per. ton. : It .was also stated thatEonie merchants - are doing good business by ordering in Wellington goods that are .' wanted "for . country: ■ a considerable distance away,' sometimes saving from one ; to two shillings per ton in - freight ' owing to the- differential >atesV ; !It ' was recolvcd: "That the chamber considers the differential rates inetjuitablo and' detrimental to tho general . interests of .'.the Dominion, and ' 1 that - tho executive take'steps to- brine the matter under-the notice of. the Prime Minister and Hiniston fOr Railways." : Another matter considered by the chamber was a reply by the Prime Minister' to a recent deputation asking that. Raetihi bo' connected with ' the ' Main Trunk line,' when. Sir Joseph Ward said that ho was. opp'osed: to short' lengths •' of railways leading nowhere.: 'Mr.'-J.
