CHARGES AT ST. HELENS, AUCKLAND.
~ The Auckland Trades and : Labour, Council, at its. last'.'.meeting, had under. consideration the case of a 'woman who. wasirtfused attendance from,' St. .'Helens Maternity 'Hospital in consequence of' inability to comply with the rule, which;'requires: a .deposit'. of Xt ;(roports the Auckland; "Star")- The ! ,i council,: ... after discussion,'i'adopted \the : follftrriiig The'.deputy secretary-(Mr.-'E;' Evans),/in torwardiug; the:'council s' mdtions"to',,thb'iGovernment, romais; "Ex-President :Eoosevolt' sent a message to ,the' world to "keep your craijles, full/ ana the l»to Eight Hon. E. J. Seddon, in furtherance ; of that wise advice, established the St. Helens Maternity Homes -Of the Dominion, for the benefit'of the workers' wives and .families!'but it .seems to my council that it is being. construed to mean only for the: benefit o£ those who have money.". The resolutions are as .follow: "(a) That tho facte relating :to the case: of the failure of,Mrs.:Wiggins to get the assistance of a trained nurse from the Auckland St Helens 'Maternity Home, she being utterly unable to'-'pay down the prescribed fee, be forwarded to the Premier .and: . city members, ,' with. a strong, request for a' public'linquiry into the 1 action of the matron under , the circumstances. , (b) ..Thai. the ' regulations'.' of,; the ' homes bo so amended as to. provide for the admission of workers' wives . free, if required, so as to prevent the recurrence of such.a cruel case in the futare.'' The- acting ■ secretary expresses a hope .that effect will, be given ,to the resolutions in order to counteract ..the increasing tendency to limitation of families. .
