LAWN TENNIS.
(By Seb-veb)
Last Saturday tlio club secretaries received circulars notifying them of the alterations-that are to be made in the teams competing in the intor-olub matchesj and judging by the expressions of opinion heard on most of the courts during the afternoon the alterations meet with general approval. Of course, there aro some objectors. Some of thesa objectors fail to seo. that the new 6chemo simply provides for four sets— possibly six for the men—on one afternoon, instead of the same number drawn out' over two afternoons. They do not appear to understand that it is the intention of . the management committco to reduce the number of rounds in the shield and cup grades. As a matter of fact, the players in. tlio shield and cup teams will got fewer games now, because the sets will be:.the .best of thirteen games, instead of thV best of seventeen games. The only serious objection is that the scheme docs not provido for the majority of the tennis players. l With the present shortage of playing grounds,' it is impossible to cater, for all players, and the better players certainly deservo first consideration.
Good cntrios have been received., for' the inter-club competitions. Naturally a .number of the clubs that entered, for the lower grades lost season aro aiming at higher honours this year. The most noticeable entry Is that of the .Bidwill Street Club, which, won first placo in the racket, competition last, season, and .has now entered for the cup. The Muritai Club—last season's runncrs-up. for the Pennant—has also enteredv for.- the .cup,';,and is going to make another try for the pennant too. The Newtown Club—the present holder - of the cup—is in for the shield,'-but is an-, able to put in a team to defend,'its claim to. the cup. The Kilbirnie Club has entered-one team for the pennant. The Khandallalf Club —the holder of the cup in "190S-:has" entered again after a season's spell.- Only two of the 1908. team 'can be counted■',ori ! for'.'.':.this,', year's team, but perhaps, when-the"matches start, some of tho others will.be induced to play again. ■..,.:.'..:.'.;:' Tho following is a list c' teams, that, have, entered:—For the shield-.' Brongham Hill, Thorndon, Victoria College, Newtown! Wei-" lington A and Wellington B: For the: cup,:. Brougham Hill,- Victoria College, Pctono, Muritai, : Khandallah, Lower'. Hiitt,' and. The fixtures, will take some time .to work out; but they-should be known to-day or on Monday; ,'.-... .'..-" .'.'. The management committee has. decided'to hold a handicap tournament:on. January I and 3, and any unfinished matches will'be, played : off on the following Saturday. The tournament will be held'at. Day's "Bay, and tho programme and' conditions, Will bo" the same ps those which governed the last New Year's tournament. Entry-forms Will be out in a few-days. ■ ■....-'.
