''.-'V Auckland, October 29.''•• At the Police Court, Harold Wiles, chemist :'*; was charged with haviug 6old liquor' without. : a license—viz., "Molendo. Old quinine port wine." The Magistrate said an analysis showed '■■•; that the wino was ordinary port, with .the >' addition of one-ninth grain of'quinine to » ; ; fluid ounco of wine. .Defendant.contended that;.\ as a chemist lib was expressly, exempted from the; Licensing Act regarding the sale of liquor,.'..: without a license.- The Magistrate held that,, for defendant to como within the exemption, ' ':*■' it must bo clear that the wine had been sold at the comparatively'low price of 3s. a bottlo, ' "... ami. was a palatable beverage. ; It was'not '[.'. supplied by doctor's prescription, and no in- > quirics woro made-at the time of'tho sale as ' to the■■ purpose for which the wino was re-, quired. '■ ■■ Auckland, -.Oc&Spr 29. : During their, stay in Auckland the. s'sgatei of the Canadian Chambers of ■ Comment-Visited a number of the more prominent hardware arid softgoods firms, and wore much impressed with the magnitude of the establishments,' and the largo stocks carried. The delegates were greatly pleased with tho'gerieral good'feeling expressed' towards Canada by local merchants, many.of whom informed the delegates that only the. unsatisfactory, shipping facilities from theeastern coast of Canada prevented them from extending their business with that Dominion. At present' the Atlantic-coast, shipping services are altogether inadequate, but, this session, there will belaid before the Canadian Government a proposal to establish a direct line of cargo steamers from Montreal in summer, and from St; John's or Halifax in winter. In consequence of f this, the delegates considered the momont opportune to forward a cable to Sir Wilfrid Launer: supporting the establishment of such a line.- .Mr. H: De Schryvor, the local representative., of the Canada'.Manufacturers' Association-, ■ was instructed to send the following cable: - / Tor the development of trade between the Dominions'an , independent Atiantio steamer. connection is imperative. .
