The Lund Line, owners of the missing "iVnratah, cannot co-ordinate the statement,of the captain; of the Harlow—as to, the explosion and sinking of a burning vessel off the Natal coast on ttiri; evening of Jnly ; 27— with.:tho known position of the Waratah prior to the time mentioned by tho oaptain of the Harlow. The Lund Line believe that what tho captain of tho Harlow saw was bush fires. [The "known position" referred to by tho Lund Line is that reported by the Clan Macintyre, whioh Sighted the Waratah, on the morning of July 27, 51 miles ahead of tho spot indicated by Captain A. J. CHIEF OFFICER'S CONTRARY OPINION. ■;,■' (Rec' October 29,. 11.5 p.m.)..,.'.'' . v .. , Sydney, October 29. ■ A letter from an- Australian resident at Manila states when the Harlow arrived there Captain Bruce reported, with reference, to.the supposed.Waratah, that ho saw on July 27 a largo steamer carrying two mast-head lights and a red sidelight, with: a tremendous amount of smoke issuing from her. Ho called the attention of the chief engineer, and they came to the conclusion that it-was a steamer afire returning to. Durban for assistance. ■,: ' While they were watching her a "huge flash occurred, throwing flames 300 feet into the air, ;.A few seconds'later a' much larger explosion occurred. When .the. smoke had bleared, all : the lights.of the ;steamer had disappeared. 'As there'.were bush.'fires along the coast, the' chief .officer was of opinion that the flames were, from these'fires, hut they could not understand tho disappearance of the steamer's lights. ..She had not signalled for help before the explosion. ■ -From the : terrific nature of tho explosion they were, of opinion that all aboard were killed,instantly. ■ ■'• '.: .
