. SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS. ■NEARLY iJOflfl SUBSCRIBED' IN .ONE ■ ' EVENING. ' , ; A 'general meeting: of clergy ' and laity- was caUed in St. . Patrick's Hall last evening to discuss .ways ' and .means. for celebrating the silver V jubilee of St.; Patriok's College. The ohair was ocoupied .by. Mr. .Martin Kennedy, who presided over' a large and enthusiastic gathering. 1 The ohairman gave some interesting" particular?. of the career of the college, and pointed- out that the building, and grounds cost, .£21,300.-.in 1885) iIO.OOO being subscribed by the people, and X 5300 by the' Marist Society. The Marist Fathers', had; paid. .£BBO6 for buildings up to 1907, and to keep the college financial .they had advanced ,£4870. The total moneys ; advanced by the. Marist Society in 24 years, not counting the services of 'a staff, of nine fathersi :was; i! 16,020.' The coUege-itoelf, had advanoed atotal of X 5957 10s. The,debt on: the. college in 1885 .was. J65500, and'.to. this, was-, added ,£ISOO in 1901, and another i 6500 in 1908,, making a total debt The amount owing to tie-.'college' for bad debts -betweejj 1886 and :1909 totalled no less, than .86700. The total cost of-the college to date was >643,277 10s. .Of this, amount the "State;-paid nothing;; the.people of the Wellington 'and Christohurch diocese \prinoipally iIO,QOO, ■ and the Marist Fathers and the : . college, j£25,777 10s., leaving the present, .debt, as lie had stated, '.£7500. '.The' speaker also dealt at some length with .the excellence of the work done, at the and' by : college pupils. ' Mr.. Kennedy formally moved that the meeting affirm the desirability of celebrating' irf ; a: worthy-manner the silverjubilee of the college, which occurs on Jtuie l, 1 1910. , ;<■ t' ' P?he Vory Rev. Father ,o'Shea seconded the motion, and expressed hope. that.the celebrations would'be worthy of .their chief educational establishment in'the. Dominion. . .' •• The motion was-carried unanimously. - ' The Hon. R. A.\icughnan moved:—"That it is desirable to J 'raise-a':fund, to be ..known asthe St. Patricks Collie Jubilee Fund, to-be applied to (a) the builidng and the equipment of. science laboratories': (so urgently, required) in, connection, with, the college; and.(b) the reduc-tion,,'ifnot-the complete extinction,, of-the existing ' mortgage .', dpi.:: on the. college."-. Mr. Lbugnnan considered that the-talent at the'college should, be, provided with a training, which ■would bring. them to the front' rank- of science, as they had in tji'o past been in mathematics and .classics. - ' .'
