The Brighton Hotel, at Brighton Beach,'about 12 tniles from Dunedln, was totally'destroyed by fire, at 8.30 t o'clock this evening. It was an old wooden.building, containing'!! rooms.. The firo' was supposed to have been ; started , by_ a lieyted ctmdlo setting '! fire to. tho curtains of a bedroom upstairs.,.. The upper portion/of the building was almost, enveloped in. flames before tho owners .were .aware of the outbreak, The building and portion of the contents were orcned by Messrs. Lane and Co.', cordial manufacturers,- Dunedin,', and 'the , licensee (Mr. Charles. Cattanaoh) owned a portion of the furIt. is understood. that •• the owners are insured,'but tho amount is :not„ available, The 1 licensee, who saved some of the.furniture, had no insurance on his portion of tho contents.
