On vthe sports 'gronnd .'yesterday; afternoon, the High School and Phoenix cricket teams tried conclusions, the students winning by half a century, and doubling their opponents' score. The exact ■ totals werei—High School 100; Phoenix -51. For the victors, J. Bennett put on a well-played 31, by vigorous hitting.' Pegdeh 19 and .Young ;15 also showed good form. Shlerike 15 was the only one on the losing side to get into double figures. The' High School team,' judging from the way, in which' it' is shaping .thus early iu the season, promises to be a hard nut to crack in the championship competitions. At tho opening of the lakelets in the Square yesterday afternoon, tho Mayor read an apology for absence from Mr. H. Wollerman, of Wellington, who is an ex-Borough Councillor, of Palmerston, and has taken especial' interest in the .beautifying of the town, 'y : Some, agitation-is afoot regarding the removal of the stock saleyards. The auctioneers propose' to' shift these from Eangitikei Street to Grey-Street, bnt a few peoplo are asking that the yards should bo removed right out of the, town.- .This would bo a serious,,blow. to the 'business- people of' the town, and they are hardly likely to let such. an .important ; point be carried by '& minority .without 'makins a vigorous protest.. The United Cricket Club held its annual booting last night, in the 'Working Men's Club, Mr.' R. A. Coyne presiding. Ten' new members were elected. The balance-sheet,' showing a credit; of-'w£s,' was adopted.' ,'Tho following oflicorsvere elected for the • year f—President, Mr. H. F. Gibbons; vice-presidents, Messrs. L. A. Abraham, C; A. Loughnan, L. N.,Taverner, A. N. Barraud, A. Drew, and J". H.Hankins; captain, Mr, Frank Wells; doputy captain, Mr. M. Martin; committee, Messrs. O'Connor, Stalker, Bartlett, and Coyne; Selection.Committee, Messrs. Martin and Coyne; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. P. Wells; delegate to Cricket Association, Mr. M. -Martin. The batting and bowling averages for last season were won by E. A. Coyne and F. Wells respectively, who will receive the trophies allotted. It was decided to give trophies for batting and bowling this soason, and an intimation was received from tho. president r that he would donate a trophy to Dc owardod as the club thought prooer. Tlio Palmerston Beantifying Society has presented two seata for the newly-formed Obbrvathry scction; of the Square. I /Much gratification is felt at the success of Palmorston students at the Victoria Collog'o term examinations, tho results showing that the grounding which thoy received in tho local primary schools was of an efficient'character. | Miss- lierii' Park- Was - an' 1 - especial- favourite among the' High School girls, and-her success 'is.hailed' with delight.
