N.Z. INDUSTRIES.
PUNS FOR NEXT YEAR'S DISPLAY. • ENTIRE CHANGE CONTEMPLATED. It. is .probable that "New Zealand Industries Week" will bo earned out on now lines next year. At the lost meeting of the Wellington Industrial Association, a' sub-comimtteo consisting of Messrs. E. Bull (prosidont), S. S. Wilbams (vice-president), and Messrs. A. Blanton, T. Ballmer, and H. P. Allen (seoret&iy), was set up for the purpose of making inquiries to find out whether there was a suitable building available to receive exhibits of New Zealand manufactures in connection with the proposal to continue the New Zealand Industries' movement. Tho two Now Zealand Industries' displays which havo beon hold wore confined to shops' oxhiblts, and wero open for h week only. According to information received by Mr. H. F. Allen, secretary of the Industrial Association, the old style of exhibition does not suit a considerable number of exhibitors.- "One of the principal objections was that the ordinary trade Was interfered with to some extent, as shopkeepers had to specially, dress their windows and exclude anything other- than goods made 111 INew Zealand. Mr. Allen has been informed by several of those'who took part in last year's display that they are not prepared to join in anything on exactly similar lines for the: future. They held that, though the arrangement. was suitable- for -the .manufacturer, they (the retailers) did not come in-in exactly the-same way, and consequently, if Industries. Week was continued. on -similar lines in future, they would not give up their windows for • the exclusive, exhibition o£ New, Zealand goods' unless the manufacturers made it worth while. As'.a result of this, i the general committed 6f ,the Industrial Association consider that it would be better to .hayb the : exhibits . displayed in one building, if such'could be arranged. . Wellington -was not as well off in regard: to buildings of the .kind as other places were. In Dunedin, for'instance, there was the Agricnltnral'Hajl, and in Christchurch there was tho Industrial Hall. It was recognised that the movement did not justify the build-, mg of a special hall in which to hold a display, but after inspecting seveVal buildings the' sub-committee decided that if they could get the loan of one of the Harbour Board sheds for, say, a. fortnight or three weoks, the association would be enabled to Becure.a good re-: presentation of manufacturers,, oven. from, beyond Wellington. Yesterday morning a visit . was paid to the Harbour' Board's "V"; shed at' the northern .side of the Custom Hsuse, which structure, was foiind to be an ideal spot for a. temporary exhibition. The building'is spacious, and contains a' gallery, in which a Special display of exhibits from "technical schools could, easily' be made.;.ln. addition, room could bo. i Ob' J tained for band. and ,still-: leavi .a promenade >fdr:.visitors.,- V.Beiiij;; handy .-'to the Ferry Wharf, tt harTmr' excursion > 'pr.' pTdb'ably .a.' regatta,' in-which tho . rowing; clubs: and yacht clubs ;wonld i be asked to. work with the association, is within the possibilities which the committee have in view. The space available in ,the "V" shed is .about.-27,534' square, feet, .which'gives., a cubic capacity- of ,375,135/.feet." ~After' inspecting the, shed, the sub-committee waited upon the secretary ..of the Harbour . Board (Mr., Nicholls), and. . explained the. position -to him, with the . result; that tho secretary of . the association was asked to forward a letter setting, out the. ; retholndustrjal'Association.'which: letter would be ■ placed hoforo the Harbour Board.,'lt is . understood '.that, ithe suggested date ,for the . industries exhibition will be in' May next, or early in June. :
