SOOTH WAIRARAPA SHOW. '< A STRONG OPENING. AWARDS AND JTJDGES' COMMENTS. ( SETTLERS', CLUB INATJGTJEATED. (By;Telegraph.—Special Reporter.)Carterton, October 27. Circumstances havo apparently conspired to be good to tho agricultural shows this year The same kind of beautiful weather which ■ ushered in the show at Hastings last week 1 has cast its mantle round tho Wairarapa Show at Carterton, Taken altogether, the show has made, a strong opening, though tho exact measure of its success can only bo determined i after " People's Day" has come and gono In" to-day's assemblage, however, there was nbtindant'indieation oi a groat attendance tomorrow Contests, so far, nave been keen, tha classes being generally well filled with btock of an exceedingly high quality Beef and Grade Shorthorns In the beef Shorthorns, which were judged by that well-known Waikato expert, N Mr W Taybr, there was a good contest between Messrs W C Buchanan, DaUioll Bros, and r W. Howaid Booth Mr Buchanan carried off . tho two coveted championships, but was other wise closely run bj his rival-,, among whom Mr Dalnell nccurcd three firsts, and Mr. Booth twd firsts, six seconds, and a third Mr Buchnnnn,'s winning* were the two championships mentioned, with'three firsts, ouo second, and four thirds The champion bull was that old roan favourite, Court Eed Eose, and tlio champion co«, alio a roan, was Duchess of Braubcu/fiOth. In the class tor grade Shorthorn cows, Mr W. Howard Booth entered the best beast—a'roan > cow—against Mr Buchanan's exhibit It is notoworthy that, 111 tho eight Shorthorn classes', roans won m seven instances And perhaps, after all, there is something sound I , in tho general preferonco for tho roan colour. 1 Fat cattle wcro good, but fo-iv With tho ' exception of one first-piue beast iiom Mr H G Williams, of .Masterton, Mr W C Buchanan's animalsrjicrc tho only entries 1 I ~' ' J,i i" ' j / > „ Where Competition, is Keenest: Dairying Classes. Nothing,'however, at this Wairarapa Show, located as it is 111 the greatest North Island cheese district, can evor rival tho interest displayed in the dairying classes It is not only I tho well-filled classes which show the existence I of tho present bias of tho farming activities of I tho Wairarapa, but also tho undisguised cagei- | ness to win 'i It is obvious that, in and arotind I Carterton, 'success in dairy work is tho lost I of prowciL 'iDown south, where they havo 1 the truo climate of the Ayrsh.res' naturo ' land, x they , boast of< tho pre-eminence of'-their -stock, but if is doubtful if they could show better qnaht}, or better progress than that exhibited''here tlus reason It has never been conclusively determined yet whether there is anything in the Wairarapa 1 farmers' contention that moro cheeso can" be got por pound from Ayrshire butter-fat < than from tho butter-fat of any other breed, ,but it is at least mdiiputablo that the, Ayrshire is the popular breed * And It has honestly won all th,opr-iise tbntAit gets It romps; 1 home in tho Wdrrarapa'T-bnttor-fat contests, no matter on what basis'-thV calcula tions are raado, and m fact there are somo' Ayrshire men hero who are ready to pnt up a fight with t ony Jorsoy man in NeV Zealand on utility, points on, apy reasonahfe sort of condition's One Ayrshiro man states that ho can find an'enthusiast leady {0 try conclusions" with tho Jerso}s oil tofal butter-fat per cow., ,or on total <.butter-fat por acre, or on total, butter-ftf- fr6m a line of, say, half a dorcn tows and heifors—tho progeny of one parent * Herefords, jJSrseys, and Holstoms. "Apparcntl} the big beef men with Hereford , not going to have all the excitement oMlvo breed rontests tb themselves The claim of the Jersey men that their little cows —beautiful -creatures thoy certainly are—will 1 cat less, and, therefore, yield more butter for the food consumed than any other breed, has at Jast conieiinto collision with a serious proposition from; the Ayrshire group, and one may patiently ayvait tho denouement Tho Ayrshire men ftojitflbseom quite at IhoWSeaS? whendiscussing but they argue that, with kind treatment, what does it matter? And Ayrshires." thej add, are as gentle-as Ton© could,,ptfssiblv wish-viThero was-a great battle for . the - dhomjJionslurl. 'Mr David Bnchanan, a great lftVer ot tho breed from Palmorston, got one of them, and Messrs Slack Bros, from tho same\district, tho other Mr. Corgan, of Doleneld, was the chief of tho other winners 1 , ' Theoudgo of the Joreeys (Mr. J G Harkness) was very pleased with tho display which came before him, though ho would have liked to see a fow mote of them. Tho classes wero not quite So well filled as'were those for Ayisbires, but a splendid type wero exhibited Messrs W. H and A E Booth and Mr. E Eagle jnn , shared the championship, and fairly ovealy divided most of the other honours Holstems find a dovoted .admirer in Mr Kirkby, of Bulls, who judged tlicm. He has seen a great deal, of the virtues of the breed in Denmark,-wheroi they are in great favoui, and though he said at Wanganui last voar that ho believed that tho New Zealand HoijtoiDS were poorer in their test than thoso of Denmark,, ho now states that he finds tlw local boasts improving in that respect, and he has great faith in the progeny of tho sires which he hod to judge to day He is an "expert who beliovcs' in saving a bit of beef to turn to account when the end Mr. Lovelock won both the championships, but Mr. Newton King won all tho other first prizes eTcept one Tho classes for milkers produced great fields Theso are the typical farmers' classes—typical of what a show chicflv. exibts for and typical of the district, The prizes were well scattered, no exhibitor taking a first prize twice over ,

The Wairarapa butter-fat contest, always an important event in dairying circles, produced some interesting results, which are'made more interesting , by. a comparison 'with last year's results; Perhaps the most striking feature of all,if tho fact, that Mr Feast's Ayrshire crossbred qOw Maggie; which won : last year's con-, test' with a remarkable record, has now fallen alibis tho fact that Mr. Feast's Ayrshire crossbred cow of Mr. Feast's, nameds Venus, however, got into fifth place, and a third of tho saiiio : owner's, a Holstdin'/crdssbre'd, colled Nigger, was .fourteenth.. The Ay'rshires as a breed —a breed-that has a very, strong hold on tho affections of the Wairarapa- people—have made a very fino show in the-contest, filling ' four of. the top. five places. Mr. Knutson's cow, fourth on the list, is said to bo of such mixed ■ the• cream of nearly all tlio breods known to sciehce-rthat the owner' was quite unable to state her breeding on thoentry form. Probably the. same explanation applies to, Mr. Hqokor's entry, which fared rather worse in the distribution of honours. Tho fact that in the Carterton rules points are allowed for. the skimmed milk; (as • the Jersey man would point out) docs not. fully account for tho Ayrshires'-high scoring. Tho counting was on the foUowing, scale:—Ono point for every 10 pounds of milk and seven points for every pound of :buttcr-fat. But even if no; points were allowed for the milk,-the Ayrshires would still remain on. top for their butter-fat alone. The contest was .waged over the. yield in a period of four days—eight-milk-ings. The winning cows did not yield the big returns, of butter-fat recorded' last year. Four of last year's cows gave each more butterfat 1 than the winner of this year. This was chiefly owing to higher tests. A Jersey gave tho highest test (17): in each. year.- Only .one cow (a Shorthorn) last year failed .to" yield milk up to the legal standard. This year there, were f.wo-70 Holstein cross and a Shorthorn ■ cross. This,, however, is not a bad-record in 29 cows. Tho overage test of the whole mob was 3.7. The very wet weather is considered to have spoilt the yield-in the last few days. .■ Following are the figures for tlio two years;— ■ , " -~ !■'-. YEAR 1908. '■ "•'. :
