" At tho Police Court to-day, a mau ; named Thomas; Aubne was charged with obtaining J!ls by forging a cheque at Pahiatua in August last; Accused was remanded to Pahiatua. Tho last section of the Palmerston Square to be beautified was opened this afternoon by tho Mayor (Mr. J. A Nash). The event attracted a large crowd of people, and great interest was manifested in tho good work carried out by the council. This portion is known as the observatory section of .tho Square, and comprises two lakelets. .In.one of these all sorts of acquatio plants are to be grown, while the other portion will bo devoted to water fowl, The Mayor turned on the water, which entered the lake •.through the rockory, and the..Mayoress cut a white ribbon stretched across the rustic bridge connecting tho lakelets. The Mayor, in the course of his remarks, traced the history of ■ beautifying the Square, and paid a tribute to the Beautifying Society, ■ and "also to those citizens who had contributed funds to enable tho work to bo carried out, and to those who had donated seats. Councillor Stubbs (chairman of tho. Reserves Committee), Mr. : F. J. Tasker (secretary of the Beautifying Society), and. Mr. S. Abrahams (ex-chairman of the Deserves Committee) made speeches X little girl, Miss Allman, let loose two hybrid ducks, and Mr. D. Thomas two black swans on tho lake. All the afternoon large nv.ir.bers of people visited this section of the square. - Entries are coming in very satisfactorily for tho Palmerston Military Tournament. Numbers have already come to hand from Dunedin, Timaru, Ashburton, Temuka, and other places in the South Island, while it is known that competitors are coming from.all over the North Island. Endeavo'irs are being made.to arrango a special train from Auckland. Among other attractions at the: tournament will be presence of the Wanganui Garrison Band (champion brass band of the Dominion), which will contribute a programme of muse on tho second day. On the first day tho Palmerston Brass Band will also contribute music. I The Palmerston Lodge of Druids gave a complimentary ■" social" last night to the' members of the entertainment committee and their wives and to Bro. Clements, the latter being on tho eve of his departure for England. There was a very large attendance and a very pleasant evening was spent. His Worship tho Mayor (Mr.-J. A. Nash), oh behalf of the lodge, presented Mesdames Prycroft, Harriman, and Lyall with silver-mounted umbrellas as a mark-of appreciation of tho members of the assistance which the .recipients'had rendered in connection with the: lodge-' social gatherings during the winter; Ho also presented a sover-eign-case to Bro. Clements, who had assisted so much at the same gatherings, and also. at other functions (extending-over, a number of years) by presiding at. the piano. The remainder of the evening was pleasantly ■ spent with cards, dancing, and music, Messrs. J. Hanley, Percy Jeffries, A. Clements, J. Robb, and B. Bowater contributing songs, Mr. J. Donaldson a hornpipe, and.Bro.. Anderson a recitation. Miss Bartlctt' and Bro. J. A. Nash played " extras " for tho dancb. . A little child of Mr. W. Hancock, of Palmerston, fourteen months old, , met with a painful mishap yesterday morning. It appears that the little one, had. been in the habit of playing with a spaniel which had always,been looked upon as particularly docile with children.. The dog yesterday morning was gnawing a bone,-when the child dropped' a toy near it, and stopping to pick it up,: the dog seized the child by the face inflicting <a severe ; and .extensive wound.
