HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of, the Lower Hiitt Borough Counoil was, held last night, when there .were, present:. The. .Mayor (Mr. ,E. ,P. Bunny), Councillors Baldwin, Macaskill,. Bar-, ' low, Hayes, Kempthorne, PearcV Anson, and •Clere.v...-''".'.-.- .':.'";;;/ ,;' : .": ;■',; ; '.''., The Hospital I Board forwarded a,demand for payment, of the council's contribution for the provision' of''an'- infectious, diseases hospital.The amount was '.£250-ss,' Oh: the' motion of the Mayor it was resolved to send the sum of .£3OO. aa a first instalment. ; ' • . Mr. E.. C. Lovvey forwarded a cheque in pay-' ment of the Hutt' Valley Volunteers'. has account for, September, and.referred to the discount' carried forward from previous month, stating that his clients were advised that the counoil cannot claim-:theso arrears, and that ifI the .'extreme' step whs taken' ; of • disconnecting, tho gas,' the council would be'liable for-dam-agos.- He suggested that I 'the: council, should 'take ;steps,'to test,.the .validity "of the' claim ■as :,sodn-as 'possible;—The } town clerk hod sent -a ( 'reply to the effect thatlif-the, amount' now,, 'overdue were 'not- paid the, previous' instructions of tho counoi["would bo.givei: effeot to. ■The clerk's action was approved... CounoiUor Clere moved, in accordance w'th notice given: "That the by-law referring to tho heights of buildings, be- altered to the effect that ground-floor rooms ,of dwelling-houses (with the exception of-sculleries) shall not be •less in height than 9ft.' 6in; over two-thirds of the area of each room, and that where rooms are on upper' floors, and are built partly in roofs, that fully half the area of ;such rooms btt'.of the heights of 9ft., and that no room to .be Yused. as . a sleeping apartment have' less cubic capacity than 750 cubic feet.' 1 It was deoided that Councillor Clere confer with the engineer in regard to the by-law. .'CounoiUor Clere further moved: "That the by-law referring to the brick, area be altered to the effect that brick buildings shall only le required for a depth, of 75ft. from the .'treet frontage, and that, should any bu'lding be partly within that distance from, the street, .the.:whole' of that building shall comply with the.law relating to brick structures." i subcommittee consisting of. Councillors .Clere,.Barlow, Macaskill, and Hayes, were set up to consider, the matter.. .. The Mavor then left.. the chair, and C< mmil-. lor Baldwin presided, while Councillor Kempthorne moved: "That'this council take steps to i protest against the proposal of the T.'amway Board by which it is desired, to a.nend the Hutt Valley Tramway, Act, with a iicw to 'make it possible to pass 'a' scheme even though a, majority.,of the ratepayers if 11-is borough may. be .opposed to it." Councillor Baldwin said that he. did not think that they had any right to. interfere in the matter. Tho motion, on being'put, was defeated, en ;the chairman's casting vote. '■'■•'• ,-''''''' : The Tinder-Secretary for Interna! Affairs forwarded : a copy of a letter from the I'etino' Borough Council supporting the application of Mr. H'. 6. Young :for the inclusion 'n the Borough of Petone of his property on the Hutt Road; and, the Department suggested that the two councils interested should confer.—lt was resolved that the council adhere to its former decision, declining to allow the land' to bo absorbed by the Pet One Borough. It was resolved, to ask Mr., G. H. Scales to act as assessor/for'the council, -n the claim ofGosse and Burt shortly to come before the Compensation Court. Applications made by Mr. H. E. Leiglilon for an auctioneer's license and a puo'ie hull license,'.in respect of the. Oddfellows' Hall, were granted. ■.:..■, .; . The Mayor was appointed to .represent the council at the meeting of'delegates to the' Wellington ' Hospital . Board. Councillors Pearce and Barlow were appointed delegates to the meeting of. Hospital; Trustees. : '
