NEW ZEALAND'S DEAD.

Sir,—lam glad to see that'so well known an officer as Colonel Sommerville - has taken- this matter up, and I am very pleased to learn from : his letter to y ; ou on this subject that some attempt has been made in New Zealand to care for the.jrraves of those who fell'in the South African War. Many (who have not been so long absent from New Zealand as > myself) do not appear to. know that Mrs. Seddon and a. committee of New' Zealand ladies have'this matter' iii hand, and I am extremely pleased to learn of;this.. The fact .remains, however,, that the graves of many of our dead in, South Africa would now be neglected were it not for the Guild of Loyal Women., of. South Africa, the annual attention necessary being, a. matter of some cost and trouble. Colonel Sommerville states that he knowß how some of the money which this guild handled was spent, but he would like to see a balancesheet. ' This" statement- bears a- double "interpretation, and one is entitled to assume, in the absence of a definite charge, that the, colonel does not know of any of the funds-being misspent. The guild is'of, necessity a. large organ; isation, and-it is possible that mistakes or irregularities,'mav nave occurred in individual cases; but the fact.that the High Commissioner and the Commander-in-Chief of the Forces in Sotfth Africa are two out of the three trustees of the funds shonld be'a sufficient guarantee of the high standing and good ; faith of .the guild. I accept the colonel's suggestion not to commence any collectionof funds until we have, a balance-sheet-'ih hand, arid'l undertake to get a report: within a few months. - - _■ .' As regards.the discrepancy •in the: number, of graves which Colonel Sommerville points out, this is explained by''Mrs. MTSwan's statement referring to the' Transvaal, only, and the colonel's figures -being' given: for the. whole; of South Africa.—l am, etc,/ ' ' . -.. ' "MOSTTN JONES,'Captain", • Feilding. . '. • : .'
