The Federal Senate adopted Senator Pearco's motion for.tlie appointment of a Select Committee to inquire into, the conditions of. the press cablo service.-' •■'. The Minister for Customs, Sir Robt. Best, expressed the opinion that tho Cable Association was not a newspaper association; it was merely a business venture. Inquiries had utterly failed to show that any monopoly : existed,' or that the association was doing anything detrimental ■. to the interests of the public. The proposal regarding a committee was unroasouable and. unfair. , Senator Tronwith consideren it'would he improper to spend public money- for tho purpose of inquiring into a monopoly which was nonexistent. .
