It Is Supposed, thht' deceased' wished- to go downstairs by tho goods lift, and, climbing on to ,the. recess, pulled the string which sets the lift in motion. , In doing this ho must have leaned over the.well, .perhaps to geo .if tho lift were 'coniiog..up, and tho weights balancing-the lift came down and pinned nim against tho cross'bar. .- .- ... ■. ' Yesterday Dr. A.' M'Artl\ur, coroner, held an inquest regarding tho, causo of .death. ' Peter ■ Campbell, 6toreman ill 1 tho em-ploy of 1 Geo. Winder, said that ho was on duty at 5.30 p.m;, taking, wire from tho basement and the .ground floor, ' Ho had not'been using- the . lift previously in .tho. afternoon, but . his assistant had. .About 5.20 ho. left the lift at. the'ground floor,-and wont away for a few minutes. When lie returned ho noticed that tho lift was. about 8 or .10 feet higher up between the ground and first floors. Witness, called out to seo if thiro wag anyone on the lift, and receiving no reply ho attempted to bring- it down, tyit-it would hot move.' He went' to the cellar, to: inspect the gear, and finding 110 defect- went away. Next morning he: and. his assistant ngain ill-' spectcd the lift, to seo why it was not working, and witness, looking up from tho ground floor," saw something in the recess between tho wall and the lift. Ills assistant said : that ho thought that: it was the body of. deceased, and witness informed Mr;. Wills, who mado an inspection. Five minutes; later witness/ in;company with "a constable, went up to the fourth floor, where they found the body.
