Napier, October 14.John O'Connell, who was injured at..the Park races yesterday, died last night at the hospital without recovering consciousness. John O'Connell had been riding for a considerable : number -of years, and during . the past three was one of the Dominion's foremost hurdle horsemen. Ho rode all the jumpers owned by Mr. A. F. Douglas, nnd on tho recent retirement of J. Hall, accepted an offer' to ride Sir William Eussell's jumpers. During his career lie won a number of important races, including the Century Hurdles on Waipu, Great Northern Hurdles on Merriwai and Waipu, and Wanganui Steeplechase on Nadador. Ho aso rode Lβ Beau into second place in the Grand National Steeplechase the year his'-brother (W. O'Connell) won the evont on Eurus. Both brothers have been killed by accidents this year. On account of his quiet and gentlemanly demeanour, John O'Connell was very popular, with all who knew Mm. He leavee a widow.

At a meeting of the Pahiatua Racing Club, held on Tnesday evening, a letter was read from '.the secretary of the Racing Conference regarding tho Wellington Club objecting to the date fixed by the JPahiatua Club (January 13 and 13) for their next meeting. It was stated that the president of the Racing Conference had approved d the dates, and after considerable discussion (writes our correspondent) it was decided to adhere to' the dates already fixed, and to forward this decision to the secretary of the Racing Conference and to the' secretary of the Wellington Eacing Club. >
