At the-annual meeting of the Longburn Cricket- Club, over which Mr. .t» Barr presided, the following officers were elected for ■ the year:—Captain, Mr. Stratton; vice-captain, Mr... Richardson; secretary, Mr. Barr; committee, Messrs. Perry, Godfrey, Dobson, Smith, Taplin, Prentice, and Chatfield: selection committee, the captain,' vice-captain, secretary, and Messrs. O. Godfrey and Dobson. Fifteen new members were elected. The secretary reported that' it. was proposed to lay down an ashphalt. pitch, the present grass pitch beipg altogether too rough. The annual subscription was fixed at 6s. Mr.' Stratton . was ap T pointed delegate to the Manawatu Cricket sociation, and it was resolved .to enter for k the junior competition. The balance-sheet'6howed accredit of ,£1 lis. 6d., which was considerea satisfactory, as the club had only been in existence a short time. . , . ■ Plans for the proposed new Anglican Church in Palmerston, to replace, the present edifice in Church Street West, have been prepared by Mr. P. de J. Clere, of Wellington. .The pre-, sent building has been found inadequate for the requirements of the congregation, and is also becoming somewhat out of repair. The plans, prepared by Mr. Clere provide for a very handsome church, a special feature of which will be a massive tower, surmounted by minarets. .There was . a large . attendance at the, adjourned - summoned meeting' of Court Manawatu, A.0.F., last night, and C.B. Bro. Rolfe presided. Among those present were a number of visitors from • all over tho Wellington' district, and to- these a hearty welcome was accorded. The visiting brothers reported that sickness among, members had decreased to a noticeable extent during the'past fortnight.. Two' new .members were initiated, and one proposed, and a considerable amount of routine business was transacted. During the evening' Bro. Hickey, who. had secured the .highest score in the Foresters' team in the interlodge card tournament, was presented with a brief, bag. • "' . '" .'■ '' : A special, meeting of the Borough Council was held last night, when a special order dealing with the raising of the .£7OOO loan for-the purpose of improving 'the .water service, _ was adopted. ~,.-••: '•■ Much':satisfaction is expressed in volunteer; circles at the success of Private Cook, of .the Palmerston'Rifles, at the Huntervillo Rifle Association's meeting on Saturday. -." (Private Cook only recently graduated into the adult corps from the".High School Cadets, being quite a young shot, and his wins in the '200 and 600 yards, and 200, 500, and 600 yards matches were naturally, ponular. - - . ■' 'Mr. J. Dalrymple, erstwhile landlord of tho Longburn Hotel, bnt now a resident of Wellington, is on a visit to Palmerston, and is accompanied by Mrs. Dalrymple. An inquest was held yesterday touching the death of an old-age-pensioner; named Edward Lucas; who was found dead yesterday afternoon- in' his bedroom. - Deceased was about 70 years of age, and came from Makotiiku, Hawke's. Bay. The medical evidence showed that death was due to aueurism of the heart, and alcoholic degeneration. A. verdict in accordance with the medical evidence was returned. . ' ..-"..

'A man named Herbert Humber went to the police station on Saturday night and asked to be locked up, or ne would break a window and compel the police to take; him in charge. He had,: he 6aid, been'looking for'work;-but .had.no money fof.food.br a bed.- He was charged:with .vagrancy this : morning,' and con-' .victed' and 'ordered to come'up for' sentence when called ' upon. James Choate, who was brought up oh remand; was charged with criminal .assault/ After' evidence, 'accused, who reserved his defenco,'.was ,'committed for trial, bail being allowed,' accused' in ,£2OO, and two sureties in ',£IOO each. 'Archibald Muir, ap-.' pearing on remand,-was brought up on 1 a charge of stealing certain sums of money from the National Mortgage; and Agency Company, totalling ~£873 6s. sd„. the alleged thefts being spread- over four 'years.
