Somewhat of a sensation was . caused by , a cow which escaped from a mob,; a'nd/gotting into town, took charge of Bidgway .Street. The barking of a swarm dogs and the cracking of many whips made; a terrific'uproar for a time, but finally the beast,, after, ineffective attempts to seek sanctuary in one or two shops, was persuaded to return to;its proper place in life. ' . ' The sc.ou- Jap.had,a narrow escape;.of going ashore at Castlecliff yesterday: afternoon.. She had just arrived off the bar from Newcastle, and was being towed in when the towlino snapped, , and for a few minutes, it looked as .if ,she would go ashore oh the south spit. Fortunately,' a strong outward current held her off, and sail being made in quick time, the vessel was able to claw off .without'hitting anything. . .. •: The ■ heavy warm rain which has fallen inland during the last few days has had the effect of causing the river to ■ run very full, though; there has been nothing in the nature of a flood.'
' The new district* High School ,is now finished, and the scholars have taken possession of the buildings, .which are on tho quadrangle, principle. . They are neat and attractive iu design, though their appearance [is considerably marred through «being flanked, by- the old wooden -. portion .of the school which escaped the fire last year. The new portion!. is so designed, however, that it can be extended to' rover the whole of the school area when' the time comes for ■ the. replacement of the old wooden • portion, .The local rowing season will open to-morrow with the usual procession of boats and-short distance races. Webb, ex-champion - sculler, 1 Unction. Ha will probably .be found actively coaching crews this.season. Webb "has started, as a builder of racing-, boats, and has already turned'out one or two excellent-.craft.
. The Wanganui "Herald,": though generally strenuous supporter of the Government, has little liking for - its Native land policy.
