COMPETITION.;I IBy'•'iolceraoh.-.SDCciai CutccsppndenU I Hastings, October 5. - The Hastings Catholic Club' field its annual oratorical competition last night. Speeches were limited to, twelve minutes each, and Father Keogli acted as judge, the maximum, points being 30. Kesults were as. follow:—Mr. Gallagher, 25 points; Messrs. P. Casey and P. L. Vickers, 21 points; Mr. T. Dov;ning, 21 points;, Mr. J. M'Quirk, 19 points; .Mr. T. Kennedy, 19 points; and Mr. J. O'Sullivan,, 16 points. The first prize was a gold : medal-pre-sented; by Dean Smythe, and a di-; ploma av;arded by the Federated Catholic Clubs.' The second prize was a silver medal. ' J The quarterly meeting of the local Chamber of Commerce was- held last night. - Sir; Wm.j Eussell -presided. Correspondence ; was rea.d| from the Minister for Railways, stating that: he-regretted that he could not authorise an'; extension of suburban' fares, and also .statin# that a: resolution' previously' passed, by the! chamber urging- the adoption, of the parcels delivery system ■ from , the railway. station • .toconsignees irithin. the .borough was receiving consideration. ' 'From Mr. W., J. Whife sue-; gesting certain amendments to the .chamber s' proposed valuation,- fees.• -These. were agreed" to." and - the writer,, thanked.', If wafc decided to ask. the Hawie'sßay County, Council to put..the, Hawea, Eoad; in-order .for stock traffic. .Mr. H. Lan Simson.drew attention to,the fact, that cheques sent to Hastings creditor's by.the offloial assignee*', in bankrupt, estates were'charged bank exchange,.' and ! it was resolved that the Minister for Justice, be' written to regarding-the matter.-' Mr. Simeon said that it was time that, the' question of-the constitution of harbour boards should; be con-; sidered. He' considered members of harbour boards should jbe electa! by the ratepayers/ Sir Wm. Russell was of opinion that it was only right that Government representatives should have seats on harbour boaras-also. Mr.: Simson agreed , with the . last speaker, and! moved that n letter-be sent-to the' Minister for' Marine stating, that the.chamber approves, of : the election of harbour boards' by ratepave'rs' instead of nomination by local bodies- This was seconded by 'Mr.- J..- A. Miller and carried.
