The New Zealand and African Steamship Company are her.local agents.. ...THE EVOLUTION OF OUK STEAMERS. ; ' At the launch' in August of the s.s. Buahino by Messrs. Wm. Denny and Bros, for the ;Now Zealand Shipping Company, Mr. .William Denny said it might bo asked>w)iythe vestol.had not been'fitted with the improved machinery, as in tho l Otaki.i built for the Bamo Owners. The reason 'was perfectly . simple, j Mr. Dawes and his co-direotors gave the matter .very careful con? sideration, and decided—and the builders; agreed with thom—that it would not bo wise to out too many eggs in. one basket. A little further experience of.the now, typo of engine was;advis--nble.: That further experience had since come to'them, and as a result the" vessel which tho New. Zcsland Company placed with' his firm.a few weeks-ago was •to be fitted with combination engines.' That was, he said, a very sl'iking proof of;.the succe'esof the new type, but it was not tne.only proof. Ho added that the •Wblte..Star Line, which fitted ■ combination. onto their Laurentio. had decided, in regard t": their ranch larger steamers now in .hand, .that this ,type' should bo fitted. ;,.;. --'- :' £:•■ ;>■ THE STAR OF OANADA.
