A BISHOP STONED.

BV ITALIAN MOB. POPE INTERDICTS SACRAMENTS. INCLUDING MARRIAGE. '18/ Tctcarapli. l'roa» A-»..r1n11.,i,._0.. D r'rli:hl.l (Rec.• October 5, 11.30 p.m.) .'■'.. ' ■. Romo, October S. ' The Pope has issued a universal interdict ngainst the Venetian city of Adria, nnd the surrounding country, in. consequence of a mob of several thousand fanatical Catholics nearly stoning the Bishop of Boggioni to death. All public sacraments, including matrimony, arc forbidden. USE OF THE INTERDICT. An interdict is a sentence by a competent ecclesiastical authority forbidding, as a rule,' the administration of the sacramen'-s, celebration of public worship, and the use of the burial service; but in tho case mentioned in tho cablegram it is apparently confined to-the sacraments of the Cliwrch. ■ ' ' In the Chronicle of Adcraar of Limoges,' it is stated that Bishop Aldnin introduced'" a. now plan for punishing tho wickedness- of tho people: he wderecl tho chnrehes and monasteries to cease from divine worship, and the people to abstain from diriiio praise." Other historical instances of the use of the interdict occur in tli« cases of Scotland, under Pope Alexander 111, in 1181, of France under Innocent 111 in 1200, and of England under tho same Pope a few years later. King John's refusal to accept Langton as Archbishop of Canterbury brought tho sentence of interdict on his kingdom in 1208. Ho was personally excommnnieated in 1209, and in 1211 tho Popo issued a bull deposing him from his throne. John at last gave way, and made an abject submission to the papal legate.
