'.Last 1 evening a visit, was paid to the local ' hapu by a party of somo 30 "Sav-. ages.". The-visitors were entertained: at'-din-'ner by, the ; local' club, at tho conclusion of which -/.the; usual complimentary toasts v wero honoured. The Empire Hall, was theiscenoof the korero, and as the season is drawing .to a olose itwas/mado a ladies' night; .The resultwas a', very representative • gathering -of Palmersto'nians. - ( Dr.. Martin; - Chief. Savage, presided, and the Wellington i-Savages were represented ..on the marae by, Mr,-Geo. , Toogood . This afternoon the.visitors were taken in drags and motor-cars to the Manawatu Gorge, where the evidences of: the winter.rains were, seen in >a cbupleof huge slips on the coach, road. Great pieces of rotten-rock havo tumbled away from ■the hillside, taking away sections .of the road, ■which will have to bo bridged. The party will return to Wellington.to-morrow morning. : i-';The Southdown- cup presented by English bleeders, and sent out by Mr. J. Stuckcy, for competition at tho Manawatu SHow, arrived yesterday. Tho trophy is a very fine one, and will doubtless create considerable rivalry among. Southdown breeders, , ; Notwithstanding tho inclement weather, there wa«! a good attendance at Kniranga Hall on Friday night; when the final of the euchro tournament was played. , The gentlemen's prizo was won" by Mr. J. O'Brien; and tho ladies' prize b> Miss Hilda Lancaster.:: During the evening Mr. Donald '-Martin presented Mr. F. Prentico with acaso of pipes, and Mr. Godfrey'with a case of razors, for kindness .in. contributing music during the whole season-gratis. :
