BEAUTIFUL BEACH AND SEASCAPE.
TO BE SHOETLY LINKED UP BY TRAM. His .the Mayor (Dr. Newman) referring to the new- Lyeli Bay tramway yosterday expressed his views on the valuo of tho seaside resorts about Wellington. The Lyell Bay tram, said his Worship, would almost certainly be ready for the holiday traffic it Christmas, and it wouli open up a beautiful sea beach and splendid seascape, which were-almost unknown to the majority of''city residents -in spite of their proximity to the town.' In tho near future, when the new tram service is running, Dr. Newman considers that the Lyell Bay. beach will prove a great holiday resort during the summer months. The tram would bring the bay within easy access' of- the city,' and the fare, would be very low, so as to,encourage tripping by families and tourists. The above class of traffic would be specially catered for by the Tramway Department: ' "Wellington city folk," .-aid Dr.' Newman, "hardly realise the valuo of tho local seaside resorts, such as Lyell Bay, Seatoun, Karaka Bay, and Island, Bay,-all of. which have i of. late years been opened up by the city trains." The Mayor, with a prophetic eye, helioves that if;the city councils of' futnro years develop the seaside resorts Wellington will assuredly beconio a great and fashionable seaside resort, something like Brighton or Eastbourne. or Bournemouth. In future years when, large boarding-houses were built at the bays, and bathing machines were erected, and' bands played, the seaside resorts would form a great source of wealth to Wellington.
