The steamer Umhlali, which went ashoro at Cape Point, South Africa, while on | a voyage from London to Natal, has become a complete wreck, The vessel struck in calm water, with a little fog. Forty-seven passengers, many of thom in thoir night ■ attiro, assembled on deck, and, believing the steamer to be sinking, 6ang tho hymn "Eternal Father, strong to save." The first boat, that was launched, containing thirteen passengers, was capsized. All soramblod back except a baby. This was the only lifo lost. , '■•
Tho other boats were headed seawards. Owing to tho refusal of the lascars to .ow, the passengers and crew had to row, and to bale out t]io boats continuously with boots, hats, and biscuit' tins. The disaster Imb caused an increasing demand for a lighthouse at Slang Kop Point.
