THE JOHNSONVILLE ELECTRIC LIGHTING SCHEME.

Sir,—l was very much surprised to rend in of to-day a letter by '/Anti-Syndi-cate, who apparently lias not carefully perused the agreement entered into by my board, and as the- poll 'is being -taken'. to-niorrow, Ihursday, ask if you will kindly publish one or two facta- in connection "with the matter, as tho letter is'very misleading. Anti-Syndicate" states that . mention is. noi. made in tho agreement that -50 lamps aro to be.erected free of charge. Mention is made in tho' agreement, and it states.that the contractor shall erect such lamps, lamp-posts, and fittings as the board may require free of charge up to-50. "What your correspondent refers, to is, yhould the board extend the/boundaries laid out in tho agreement, then a payment has to btrinadp for. .extra wire and posts.;. . With regard, to tho position and*cost of the power-house,, that is a matter which does not concern tho .board, as it .is to'be erected at tho contractors' cost, but a clause is inserted that the works must be erected to the satis-, faction of the board and the board to bo the solo judge. The. lights referred to at Khandallah are.lG c.p. out of date, whereas those to be crccted in Johnsonville are 32, c.p., and the newest kind obtainable, tho "Osrnm/' • Tho agreement • with" the- syndicate • has been drawn up-by one of the leading firms of solicitors, who has protected the ratepayers'" interests, and it; is not correct for "Anti-Syndi-cate" to say that the board is divided, as they are practically at one-in regard to;tho ficheme. .. • : . ;■' It is also, incorrect to' Fay that the rights of the ratepayers have been given away for 30 years, .as the ratepayers can 'take the works over as a - going 'concern. after tho first five years',at any tirao by giving six months' Notice to purchase at valuation. This is provided for, in the agreement.. : • I invito any ratepayer to meet mo at-my office-any time before they vote, whfcn'l will answer ' Ml questions, produce the" agreement, and verify what I have written, and' explain any points they wish, to rftiso,—l-'am, etc., "y ■ . JOHN ROD, -■ ■ ' i Chairman. Johnsonvillo Town.Board.,./ /Johnsonville,'" September 15, 1909. '.'V ;
