Worcester which; had • been unoccupied for three- months,'and was. recently renovated; preparatopv to rcocc'upatiou, was entirely destroyed by fire last evening. An alarm' was given, and steam engines, a horsed chemical and'a motoi chemical; with, eighteen ' men, turned out.-; The. fir<v had a strong hold ivhen first observed, and it-was"sonic, time.before a supply of water was available. Chemical engines do little more than prevent the spread of a firs to adjoining, buildings; Wator was eventually obtained from the East Christchurch school-.bath, loth the steam engines being used to force the water round tho intervening block. The house was the property of Mr. w. Batt, and was insured' in the' Standard office. An adjoinin; boardirighouse had a narrow escapc. ~ • ' Greytown, September IS. : .Mr. John Butler's cottage was burnt down at 12.30 this morning. It was'.insured' for in tho State Pire office. . About 10.25 a.m. yesterday the Kro Brigade received a call .to No. 5 Hopper Street, a pastrycook's;shop and dwelling,-owned by Mr. T. B. Beveridge and occupied' by Mr. Horbort Stanbridgo.
