ASSOCIATION.
'SENIOR LEAGUE. ' ' . 'FIRST DIVISION HATCHES. -In fine weather, the Association senior-first division championship , competition' wsis advanced a. further- stage, on- Saturday. afternoon, tydike. the I .previous season,: when 'the! closing matches ■ of - the senior championship disclosed an,eitiiting.finish,'and keen interest.was maintained : rignt; to the very eild of the season, there are only two teams-in the. running this year, the rest being nowhere, praotically speaking. ■ Saturday's matches • give Y.JI'.C.A. and Swifts an .even lead with 22 points, each. The' next y team;;Diamonds, is 4 points behind, while Rovers are 5 points behind Diamonds. Under the-'circumstan'ces, and'.Swifts might as , well play off, and be done with it,- for the season is 'getting lite., So far as. ,the other teams' are concerned/ the interest gone; as is evidenced by. the fact that hot'one'of them noff-appears on the field, with'a full muster of- senior players... The • only", senior-, match worths'mention was that . between Y.M.C.A; 'arid Rovers, 'it-the Basin Reserve. The/others w'eroihalf-hearted^ games.. ■ . , ' : Y.M.C.A. (1) V. ROyERS (0), There was: nothing very brilliant about .the contest between. Y.fi.C.A. and Rovers. Tho Y.M.C.A. men were superior to the extent that , they were able-to score one goal against their opponents'- Their, forward line . was. faster, and; their 1 tactics characterised by better combination than those'of'the Rovers. ' .Y.M.C.A. ledrolf with , a rush, and for some, time-gave ROvars'.baek division plenty, to do. Timperloy was ! . particularly dangerous, and nearly scored, the ball going u. little high. , Three ' corner-kicks-neainst Rovers made; things very, lively about the: posts, but_ the leather ivas'eventually driven up the field beforo the crisis became too acute, and somo energetic play .by the Rovers forward line [resulted - in a corner against Y.M.C.A. The ball came perilously near the goal, .biit Hollis. (goal-keeper) cleverly sent it over tho bar./,Y.M.C.A. .Thou, counterattacked, broko through•the Rovers''defences, and Kingwell, from point-blank range, drovo the.ball through. Oldnall had no chanco of: saving. Rovers, again-.attacked,and' came within an noo of scoring oven honours. Prom. 1 then on to the end of tho first spell; piny was " mainly ; oentred in- Rovers' ground. . During tho second spoil • tho game sadly'deteriorated. Rovers, who iwere'playing several junior' nten,. did fairly welj," considering, but, generally, speaking, the combination of both teams was-inferior, wliilo the kicking .was'inexcusably, bad.' The .'shots that wore miwerl were" "quite frightful' to ' eee,"' M Mi. ' Bill
Nye would haye expressed it. There was no further score. Mr. W. Wood' carricd tlio whistle. '- . ST. JOHN'S (5) V. WANDERERS (1). St. John's had an easy win of five goals to one against Wanderers at Newtown Park on Saturday. The defeated team consisted largely of junior players, and made a very poor snowing. indeed. As to tho game, thero is little to be said.. Ashe and .Woodcock occasionally did somo smart work -for the Wanderers, Woodcock scoring the only goal obtained by that team, after a, plucky run and a succcssful drive at tho posts. For St; John's, Gosney and Fergnson did conspicuously good work. RAMBLERS (2) V. PETONE (1). ; The Ramblers-fetonc match, played on the 'suburban ground, was fairly interesting, the game generally being an energetic one, though it could scarcely be termed a scientific one. ' l'eto'ne' attacked vigorously, and Senior, from a pass from Ball, nearly scored. Tho first spell ended-without a score. In tho second half, Ramblers livened up, and, in; a. melee about the'suburban goal,, tho ball slipped through. Brice, soon after, unfortunately, let his side in for a second goal by inadvertently : punching the leather. (from a free-kick), between his own posts., Ball" then retaliated for I'etone, and scored from a centre from Barker. I The: call of time 6aw Petono pressing the Ramblers defences with, great determination, and the game ended in a win for Ramblers by two goals to one.. ' DIAMONDS (4) V. THISTLE.(2). i Considering the'fact that'both teams con-, sisted of several junior the DiamondsThistle match was fairlj; interesting, play being at times fast and exciting. Thistle, from tho kick-off;- became aggressive, and scored almost immediately, Slater making a clever shot at the ! posts. Diamonds returned the - attack with spirit, and Robertson evened matters 'with a neat'drive from tho right. Up-arid-down play followed, for a time, until, Lowe scored a second goal" for Diamonds, and the spell ended with : tho J scores at two to one . in favour of the ■Blacks. Tho second spell had just commenced when Roberts scored a third goal, 'for the ; Blacks, with a hot drive.. Thistle then pressed for an advantage, and Blackwood, from a diffi. cut angle,'sent in a splendid.shot—two goals-for .Thistle. Diamonds vigorously counter-attacked, and from some clever play by Black, who centred well, Lowe scored at point-blank rango. The game ended in a win for the Blacks by fpur goals to two. Mr. J.'Davidson was referee. , ' ■ SECOND DIVISION. At ; Miramir; Marist 'Brother's' Old Boys defeated Porirua B team by twelve/goals to nil, , after a game which .was well up to the averago standard;of play. Playing against the'wind - during the first spell, the winning team scored soyen times,-the other five, being added in the final spell. Hill (4), Dooley (4), Mulhane (2), :and Hodgson "(1), scored'for the. "winners. Mr. H. G.-Mayer controlled tho-game. - JUNIOR MATCHES. .'.-In-the junior first division league matches, for the Henderson Memorial Cup; Y;M.C.A. defeated Diamonds by five goals to nil.
