' Canterbury College, losing the toss, kicked pa vfrom --the, south' end, and opened briskly, keeping play in. the Sydney twenty-five: am from a. free-kick, Chrystall had an unsuccessful shot at goal■ A forward rush, headed by Wigloy, had Sydney defending, .but Fisher saved by finding touch. Canterbury kept up tne attack, their forwards playing a fast Irnst mg game that gave the Sydney backs no chances. The Sydney defence was very severely tested for a considerable period, but, while Canterbury .were still attaoking, a pass from Chrystall to M'Kemio went astray, and Curtis, snapping, up tho ball, ran to the Canterbury twsnty-flve, where ■. Harley overhauled him.. The Canterbury forwards soon drovo their opponents back, .but .the Sydney men livened up, and a loose rush brought pla : the homo team's twenty-five. From a mark, Lane made a good shot at goal, the ba goirig: just outsido the post. After some indecisive play in midOeld a good run by Rhodes had Sydney again defending, and some vigorous rushes by the home forwards took. tho ball to the Sydney goal-line, but attempts to pick up the ball lost a capital chance of scoring. At this stage, Canterbury were playing a much stronger game,' Young, Henderson, and Wilson being "prominent in several rushes that gave the visitors a very. anxious: time. The handling of the ball by the homo team's backs, however, was very faulty, and this undid all of tho work accomplished by the forwards. Just at the end of the spell, however' Wilson made.a nice run; and passed to Williams, Who scored near the corner. Canterbury 3 points; Sydney, nil. ■ At the opening of the second spell. Canterbury showed the same, dash that had charac-terised-their play In the. te,t W\J,,V>ui the VitmMtag ot tlie ball by their backs showed no improvement, , and presently a. Sydney, rush, headed by. Broughton, took play to Canterbury territory, where Fisher gained a lot of ground by some-well-judged line-kicking. The Canterbury forwards soon cleared their line, and with.play in midfleld, Ehodes made a fine run, which beat the Sydney backs. Ho capped this by kicking past Fisher, and Wilson, who had followed up. fast, scored in a,good position. Canterbury College, 6 points; Sydney, nil. A mdmerit later Ferguson put in a dashing run, which' took play to the Sydney'lino, and Anderson scored; Canterbury, 9 points; Sydney, nil. ' Canterbury kept up the attack, and Young, taking a long pass from Ehod«s, got across the line,'Chrystall converting the try. 14—0. Sydney then livened up, and a :good Tun by Poikley had Canterbury defending; A scramble on tHo Canterbury lino eventually gave Sydney an opening, and Mctcalfo scored a try, which Fisher converted. Canterbury College, H point*; Sydney, 5. Canterbury soon returned to the attack, t and Sydney were forced twice in quick succession. In the last few minutes, Sydney showed much improved form, and their backs mado somo very 'attractive passing rushes,-which were-.spoilt by mistakes at'critical timos. The visitors, however, were unable to sustain their effort, and, when the game onded, they wore still defending. The final sc6re was:—Canterbury College, 14 points'; Sydnoy, 5 points. A CLOSE FINISH. '.■:•':■.-' - Oamaru, September 0. The annual football match between North Otago and South Canterbury was played to-
\ay, and proved one of the fastest and most inciting games ever seen here, being eventually won by North Otago by 12 points to 10. In the first spell Moffatt scored a try for tho nsitors, which was oonverted by G. Spillanc, jvho also kicked a ponalty-goal, and another ni the second spell. . For Worth Otago, Boss in too second spell, kicked three goal from almcuH angles with threo successive kicks' and E. Curran scored a try after beating all opposition.- . .'" A good exposition of "Soccer" was given, the play generally exceeding expectations, and being instructive and beneficial to the game in Uaranaki. •'• Tho'exchanges were fast, and particularly good play was shown by Auckland, who, having the benefit'of : two previous matches, •showed better' combination • than Taranaki. The most conspicuous players on the visitors' side wero Marshall, at half, and Whittle, Sale, ani Foreshaw, forwards. For Tarannki, Eobinson, at back,, M'lnnes, at half, and Schofield and Eggleston, were prominent.' The gome ended in a win for Anokland by 3 goals to 2. Taranaki secured a penalty goal, and an Auckland man (Seuth) turned the ball through, his own ■goal, thus accounting for Taranaki's other ecoro. Mr. Takle, the Auckland manager, was referee. .'.!.
