There wero a number of others in tho room, 1 none of them eating, but all of them having'bottles and glasses in front of them. After watching what was going on for. a short time, ( fhe constables left with two bottles of ■ bear in' their possession, haviag been admon.

Evidenoo was also given by Sergeant Rutledge and Constables M'Kelvcy, Ewart, and Kelly. . When the case for tho prosecution had been conoluded, Mr. M'Grath intimated-that defendant wished to alter his plea to one of guilty, t His Worship said that a heavy penalty was provided , by. the Licensing Act and licensees ivho .-paid for their privileges mrist bo protected., A-.fino of .£lO and- 7s. costs Was imposed in each case, with an alternative of one month's imprisonment, also on each charge. !. THEFT OF WHISKY. . On . Saturday afternoon Cornelius Murphy left hi 9 ojpresfi standing in Lambton Quay, and, a portion of tho load, two bottles of whisky, took the fancy of Joseph Goodior. Whon charged with tho theft Goodier pleaded guilty. He was fined 205., and ordered to pay 55.,. tho value of one bottle of whisky, in default seven days. . - , . - •; ./ INSOBRIETY. Four first offenders for insobriety were fined 55., and one other 105.,; in default-21-hours' imprisonment. Wm. Severn, who had been previously convicted, was fined 205., in default seven days. . : - ' SUMMARY .SEPARATION. - Alice E. Soffe .applied-for an order of sum-' mary separation from her husband, Joseph Soffe. The ordei; was made as asked for, complainant being granted custody of the child, and defendant being ordered to' pay 10s. a week towards tlur child's' maintenance, and costs '£2 Us. Mr. ICirkcaldie appeared for complainant. : OTHER: CHARGES. . A young man named Chas. Taylor pleaded guilty to a oharge of insobriety,-and was convicted and discharged, : On a onargo of attempting to commit an unnatural offence he was, on tho application of Sub-Inspector.Nor-wood, remanded to September 8. A respectably-dressed young , woman named Kate WiUon pleaded guilty to a charge of behaving in a disorderly manner whilst drunk-in Riddiford Street., Sho was fined 20 5., in default . seven- days' imprisonment.
